NOTICE TO THE READERS. gov The two series of tables, which form the third and fourth parts of this volume, were digested and published under the authority of Congress and an instruction of the Treasury. With these tables, the communication of the eighth of December, 1812, from Mr, Coxe, (who was engaged by the ernment to prepare a statement of the ARTS and MANUFACTURES of the UNITED STATES,) was addressed to the secretary of the Treasury. It comprised parts I. and II. of this book, and is to be considered as the work of an individual, occasioned by his desire to be useful to his country. To the copy furnished for this publication, some recent notes have been added, to extend the exposition of the condition of our manufactures, in some degree, to the state of things in the current year. It may be proper to remark that some alterations, containing, with part of the notes, matter, which would not have been inserted in an official paper, are now introduced from considerations of public utility.
