PREFACE.

THIS Edition of Selections from OVID'S METAMORPHOSES differs from those which have preceded it chiefly in this, that the Text is considerably shorter, and the Notes very much more full. The Text is even now perhaps unnecessarily long for the purpose it is intended to serve but the greater part of the present Text having been printed off before it came into the Editor's hands, he had no opportunity of exercising a discretion in respect of it. As no additions have been made, the old Editions can be used side by side with this, if only the lessons are taken from the abridged Text.

It will be seen that the Notes differ in some respects, both in character and in arrangement, from those of ordinary SchoolBooks and as the Editor has had much more experience of direct teaching by word of mouth, than of indirect teaching such as this, he feels some diffidence as to the result; and will gladly receive, and if possible turn to account, any suggestions for improvement which may occur to those who may use this Book. His primary aim has been this,-to give to Boys, such as those for whom these Extracts are intended, sufficient assistance in the
