His love unchangeable and free,
Faithful and true to God and me;
A friend in every ftate the fame,
And worthy of that facred Name.

Thus happy in my God and Friend,
I'd wait till life's fhort journey end;
Then with
my friends above appear,
And have my Wifh compleated there.

ON THE DEATH OF A MUCH-LOVED WIFE.

[By the Rev. Mr. G.]

DISTRACTING scene! Oh fatal stroke!

All human fkill is now too late:

The cords of life at length are broke,
And Nature muft fubmit to Fate !

No longer now my Lucia needs

Our friendly aid; the conflict's o'er : A tranfient calm the ftorm fucceeds, And now alas! fhe breathes no more.

Yet fmiles atteft a foul ferene;

Her mortal frailties are forgivén:

Let Hope illume the tragic scene,
Her pardon now is fealed in heaven.

But ah! to what far diftant coaft,

Is flown the spirit of my dear? In what wild region art thou loft? Oh gentle spirit, tell me where!

Whether

Whether beyond the radiant pole,

Unnumbered leagues, on wings conveyed, Where comets blaze, or planets roll,

Through azure-depths of space art ftrayed?

No; rather 'midft the angelic throngs,
To thy bleft foul a place is given;
Where feraphs chant immortal fongs,

With cherubs, round the throne of heaven.

Perhaps with sympathetic care,

Invisible to mortal eyes,

Thou hovereft in the fields of air,
A witness to our tears and fighs.

There pleafed, thy fweet maternal love,
Our youthful offspring ftill furveys;
Sent by the indulgent powers above,
The guardian of their thoughtless days.

Oh let me burst this clay-built fhrine!
That veils my Lucia from my fight;
Unite my ravifhed foul with thine,
In realms of empyreal light!

There, undisturbed by grief or pain,
Let hymns of praise our hearts employ,
Till each loved friend we meet again,
And endless blifs in heaven enjoy!

SHORT

SHORT HYMNS,

Rom. xv. 2. Let every one of us pleafe his neighbour, for his good to edification.

[blocks in formation]

2 Tim. iv. 18. The Lord fhall deliver me from every evil work, and will preferve me unto his heavenly kingdom.

THAT ftedfast faith divine,

Jefus on me beftow,

To' affure this trembling heart of mine,

Thou wilt not let me go;

In every time of need,

Thou wilt my foul defend,

And fave from every evil deed,
Till all my conflicts end.

With me, moft gracious Lord,
In my temptation flay,

And by thy comfortable word

Preferve unto that day,

When thou, our King, fhalt come,

With all thine angels down,

And take thy fuffering fervants home,

And with thy glory crown.
