Her Faith's and Hope's foundations. Thou art gone
My lovely Mate! to the celeftial Throne,

And Heaven's unbounded Joys: foon fhall this house
Of clay diffolve and then, my pious Spouse,

Thy Partner on glad wings fhall take his flight,
And join his dear Maria in the world of light,

A TRANSLATION of a Latin EPITAPH,

Written by Sir RICHARD BLACKMORE, on himself.

HILE the free spirit towers into the skies,

WH

Here void of life, the mouldering body lies: But when the Prince of heaven, the Judge of All, Returning visits this terreftrial ball:

I fhall revive (may not my hopes be vain!)
And with him everlasting blifs obtain.
And thou, long Partner of my life, but now
The longer partner of my grave below;

: Faft fleeping by my fide, with me fhall rise,
When the Archangel's trumpet fhakes the fkies:
And in the ardors of seraphic love,

We both fhall fcale the blissful feats above:
The while we teach the heavenly towers to ring,
With loud Hofanna's to our Saviour,-King;
And while new Anthems, and harmonious verse,
The Father's boundless Mercies fhall rehearse,
Eternal glories from the God fhall shine,
Attract, affimilate, exalt, refine,

And fill our fouls with extafies divine.

On

On GENERAL WOLFE.

'N various climes immortal honours won,

IN

Quebec fubdued, great Wolfe! thy task was done.
The Victor fell, with mournful laurels crowned;

His friends, 'midst shouts of triumph, weeping round,
He fell, by every grateful Briton mourned!
With every virtue, every grace adorned:
A genius that improved; a feeling heart,
That humanized even War's deftructive art;
An Hero, fparing even of hostile blood;
Like Julius brave, like gentle Titus good.

Undaunted in the field, in counfel fage,
He gained in youth the dignity of age.
When glory called, each dangerous post he fought,
And proved himfelf the difcipline he taught.
Quick to difcern, reward, and pleafed, make known
Each spark of latent merit, but his own.

Thus trained to love, his troops with pride obey,

And bravéd even death, whenever He led the way.

Such was great Wolfe! his much-loved Country's pride; For her he lived, for her he bravely died.

A formidable Foe; a cordial Friend;
Great in his life, and glorious in his end.

For the STATUE of HEALTH,

Under an Ionic Pavilion in the King's Bath.

USPICIOUS Health! fair daughter of the fkies, O! guard with ease these springs that teaming rife; Whose healing virtues, (freed from dire distress,)

Millions have felt, and millions daily bless.

Ye

Ye languid tribe, with grateful hearts receive, The bleffing these balfamic Fountains give: If Bath's falubrious ftreams your health reftore, Thank heaven; be temperate; "Go and fin no more."

SHORT

HYMN S.

James ii. 26. For as the body without the foul is dead, fo faith without works is dead alfo.

Α AS

S when the active foul is fled,

A fenfelefs lump the body lies,
The faith which did from God proceed,

If fep'rated from works it dies,
A carcafe without life or power,
A faith extinct is faith no more.

Faith without works is not the true;
The living principle of grace,
The virtue which can all things do,
Works univerfal righteousness;
And gains, when all its toils are paît,
The promife of pure love at last.

Know this, ye infidels in heart,

Who boaft your barren faith in vain,
Who dare the facred word pervert;

The carcafe dead is not the man:

Or if ye did true life receive,

Ye ceafed at once to work and live.

Dreamers of your falvation sure,

Awaking unto righteousness,

Your Antinomian faith abjure,

Your groundless hope, and hellifh peace;

Arife, and wash away your fins:

And then the works of faith begins!
