John v. 47. p. 211. 112 33

Mat. selse make the tree corrupt and his fruit corrupt; 34

for the tree is known by his fruit. 'O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?

for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth 35

speaketh. A good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth good things, and an evil

man, out of the evil treasure, bringeth forth evil 36

things. But I say unto you, that every idle word

that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof 37

in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said to them, An evil and aduiterous generation' seeketh after a

sign, and there shall no sign be given to it, but the 401

sign of the prophet Jonas. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall

the Son of man be three days and three nights in 41

the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall con

demn it, because they repented at the preaching of 42)

Jonas, and behold a greater than Jonas is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear

the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than 43

Solomon is here. When the unclean spirit is gone

out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seek44)

ing rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and

when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and 45

garnished.' Then goeth he, and taketh with himself, seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall

it be also unto this wicked generation. 46

Mat. While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren

Stood without, desiring to speak with him. 13 31 Mar. There came then his biethren and his mother,

And standing without, sent unto him, calling him. 32

Mar. And the multitude sat about him.
Mar. And they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy

brethren without seek for thee. 47

Mat. I'hen one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and

thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with

thee. 45

Mat. isut he answered and said unto him that told him,

Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? 331 Mar. And he answered them, saying,

Who is my mother or my brethren?
341 Mar. And he looked round about on them which sat about

him,
And said, Behold my mother and my

brethren.

And said, Behold my mother and my brethren. 50

The same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

ther. Sect. 49. Jesus goes out to the sea of Galilee, and delivers

the parabolical sermon. He begins with the parabie of the sower, and explains the reason of his teaching the people by parables. He interprets the parable of the sower, and delivers

that of the lighted lamp.. 13 )

Mat. The same day went Jesus out of the house and sat

by the sea side. Mar. And he began again to teach by the sea-side. Mat. And great multitudes were gathered together unto, him, so that he went into a ship, and sat,

And the wbole multitude stood on the shore. Mar. And there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea,

And the whole multitude was by the sea on the

land.
8 4 Luke And when much people were gathered together, and

were come to him out of every city,
Luke He spake by a parable,
5

A sower went out to sow his seed.
21 Mar. And he taught them many things by parables, and

said unto them in his doctrine, 3!

Hearken, behold, there went out a sower to sow. 3

Mat. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying,

Behold, a sower wept forth to sow. 4

Mat. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side,

And the fowls came and devoured them up. 41 Mar. And it came to pass as he sowed, some fell by the

much earth. 51

And because it had no root,

And because they had not root,

They withered away.

And the thorns sprung up, and choked them.

And the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it

And the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 Luke Ind other fell on good ground, and sprang up,

And bare fruit an hundred fold.

And brought forth some thirty, and some sixty,

And brought forth fruit some an hundred fold,

Mat. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Mar. And he said unto them, He that hrath ears to hear,

llet him hear.
-Lukt And when he had said these things, he cried, He that

nath ears to hear, let him hear. 9 Lukt And his disciples asked hind, saying, What might

this parable be? 10

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the

mysteries of the kingdom of God. Mar. And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve, asked of him the parable.

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to

know the mystery of the kingdom of God. 10

Mat. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in paraðles ?

He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the

kingdom of heaven. Mat. But to them it is not given. Mar. But unto them that are without, all these things are

one in parables :

Luke But to others in parables ; 12

Therefore speak I to them in parables; because they

seeing, see not; and hearing, they hear not ; neither 14

do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear,

and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and 15 shall not perceive. For this people's heart is waxed

Mar. That seeing they may see, and not perceive;

And hearing they may hear, and not understand.
Mar. Lest at any time they should be converted, and tbeir

sins should be forgiven them, 16

Mat. But blessed are your eyes, for they see ; and your 17

-ars, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye şee, and have not seen them; und to hear those things which ye hear, and have not

heard them. 13

Mar. Ind he said unto them, Know ye not this parable ?

and how then will ye know all parables ?
Mat. Heat ye therefore the parable of the sower.
11 Lukt Now the parable is this,

The seed is the word of God.
141
Mar.

The sower soweth the word.
12 Luku Chose by the way-side, are they that hear :

Then cometh the devil, and taketh away the
word out of their heart, lest they should believe

and be saved. 15 Mar. And these are they by the way.side, where the word

is sown; but when they have heard, (or rather, wbo, when they have heard, kui being often put for the relarive pronoun),

Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away

the word that was sown in their hearts. 19

Mat. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not,

Then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away

that which was sown in his heart :

This is he which received seed by the way side. 20

Mat. But he that received the seed into stony places,

The same is he that heareth the word, and anon

with joy receiveth it. 1 Mar. Ind these are they likewise which are sown on stony

round,

Who, when they have heard the word, imme

diately receive it with gladness. 13 Lukerhey on the rock, are they

Which when they hear, receive the word with

joy. Luki Ind these have no root, which for a while-believe,

And in time of temptation fall away. 17 Mar. Ind have no root in themselves, and so endure but

for a time :

Mat., Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while,

For when tribulation or persecution ariseth be

cause of the word, by and bye he is offended. Mat. He also that received seed among the thorns, is he that heareth the word:

And the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh

unfruitful. 4 18 Mar. And these are they which are sown among thorns :

such as hear the word,

And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things en. tering in, choke the word, and it becometh un

when they have heard, go forth,

And are choked with cares, and riches, and plea. sures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfec.

Mat. But he that received seed into the good ground,

Is he that heareth the word and understandeth it, which also beareth fruit,

And bringeth forth some an hundred fold,

some sixty, some thirty. 201 Mar. And these are they which are sown on good ground,

Such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit,

Some thirty fold, some sixty, and some an

hundred.
15 Lukt But that on the good ground,

Are they, which, in an honest and good heart
having heard the word keep it,

And bring forth fruit with patience. 21 Mar. And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be

put under a bushel,

Or under a bed and not to be set on a candle

stick ? 16 Luke No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it

with a vessel,

Or putteth it under a bed : but setteth it on a

candlestick. Lake Chat they which enter in may see the light. 17 Luke For nothing is secret, that shall not be made mani

Neither any thing hid, that shall not be known,

and come abroad. Mar. For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifest

Neither was any thing kept secret, but that it

should come abroad.
23 Mar. If any man have ears to hear let him hear.
241 Mar. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear.

18 Luke Cake hecd therefore how ye hear.
