Grimflon, Viscount Grimfton.

THE right hon. Sir James Bucknall Grimfton, lord viscount Grimfton and baron Dunboyne, was born May 9, 1747, and fucceeded his father James, the late and fecond viscount, the 15th of December, 1773, and is now one of the knights of the fhire for the county of Hertford, in the parliament of Great Britain. His lordship married, July 28, 1774, Mifs Harriet Walter, only daughter of Edward Walter, of Stalbridge, Efq; (by his wife Harriet, daughter and coheir of George late lord Forrefter, of Scotland) by whom he has iffue, viz. James Walter, horn September 26, 1775.-Har rict, born Dec. 14, 1776.-Charlotte, born Jan 16, 1778.

This noble family is denominated from its poffeffions in the county of York, and defcended from Silvefter de Grimfton, who at tended William duke of Normandy, in his expedition to England, as ftandard-bearer, and fought valiantly at the battle of Haftings, where the kingdom proved the reward of their victory over Harold, who then poffeffed the throne; and the year following did homage for Grifton, Hoxton, Tonfted, and other lands in Yorkshire, and from whom defcended,

(1st Baronet.) Sir Harbottle Grimfton, who was advanced to the dignity of a Baronet of Great Britain, 25 Nov. 1612, and married Elizabeth, daughter to Ralph Coppinger, of Stoke in Kent, Efq; and had iffue five fons.

(ad Baronet.) Sir Harbottle, the second fon, fucceeded his father; and on the reftoGent. Mag. March, 1788.

ration of king Charles, he was appointed one of his Privy Council, Speaker of the Houfe of Commons, and Mafter of the Rolls. He married, firft, Mary, daughter to Sir George Crooke, Knight, by whom he had fix fons and two daughters; of which fons five died before him, and George, the eldeft of them, died in the 23d year of his age, leaving no fue by his wife Sarah, youngest daughter and coheir of Sir Edward Alfton, who married firft with John duke of Somerfet, and after with Henry Haire, the fecond lord Coleraine.-The daughters were, Mary, married to Sir Capel Luckyn, Knight and Baronet; and pizabeth, to Sir George Grubham Howe. His fecond wife was Anne, elder daughter and heir to Sir Nathaniel Bacon, Knight of the Bath, by whom he had,

(3d Baronet.) Sir Samuel, his heir, who married, firft, Lady Elizabeth Finch, elder daughter to Heneage Earl of Nottingham, Lord High Chancellor of England, by whom he had an only daughter, Elizabeth, who was married to William Saville, marquis of Halifax.-He married, fecondly, Lady Anne Tufton, youngest daughter to John fecond Earl of Thanet, by whom he had a fon and a daughter, who both died young; and the title of Baronet expired with him, who died is October, 1700, leaving a great eftate, under certain limitations, to William Luckyn, Efq; fecond fon of Sir William Luckyn, who was fon and heir of Sir Capel Luckyn, by Mary, eldeft fifter of the faid Sir Samuel Grimfton.

Luckyn

Luckyn was created a Baronet, 2d March, 1628, and married Mildred, daughter to Sir Gamaliel Capel, Knight, by whom he had two daughters and two fons; Sir Capel, his heir, and Sir William, who was created a baronet 13 Nov. 1661.

(24 Bart.) Sir Capel, his heir and fecond Baronet, married Mary, eldest daughter of Sir Harbottle Grimiton (as already obferved) and had a numerous iffue, whereof William fucceeded to the title and estate; and which

(ad Bart.) Sir William married Mary, daughter to William Sherington, Efq; Alderman of London, by whom he had 10 fons and 5 daughters, viz. Sir Harbottle, his fucceffor, who died unmarried.-William, adopted heir to Sr Samuel Grimfton, and advanced to the peerage. The reft died young or unmarried

(4th Bart. and 1ft Viscount.) Sir William, the fecond fon, being adopted by his uncle Sir Samuel Grimfton heir to his eftate, in virtue of the limitation thereof affumed the name of Grimfton, and was member of parliament for St. Albans, and was advanced to the peerage of Ireland by privy feal, dated at St. James's, 29th April, and by patent at Dublin, 3d June, 1719, by the titles of Baron Dunboyne, in the county of Meath, and Viscount Grimfton, to him and his heirs male. He married Jane, daughter of James Cook, of London, Efq; by whom he had 19 children, 5 whereof lived to maturity,

Creations. Baronet of Great Britain, 2d March, 1628, 4 Car. I. Viscount Grimfton and Baron of Dunboyne, in the county of Meath, 3d June, 1719, 5 Geo. I.

Arms. Quarterly, the sft and 4th quarters pearl, on a fefs, diamond, three mullets of fix points pierced, topaz, and in the dexter chief an ermine fpot for Grimston the second and third quarters diamond, a fess dancette between two leopards faces, topaz, for Luckyn.

Creft. On a wreath, a ftag's head coup'd, proper attired, topaz.

Supporters. The dexter a ftag reguardant, proper attired as the creft. The finifter a gryphon, reguardant, topaz.

Motto. Mediocria firma (middling stati

3d -Harbottle, an officer in the army. 4th -George, married, in 1744, Mifs Clover, by whom he had a fon, and died in 1782.

(2d Viscount.) Sir Jaines, the fecond Vifcount, fucceeded his father, and married Mary, daughter of William Bucknall, Efq; and by her, who died in Aug. 1778, he had iffue, viz.

ift fon. James Bucknall, the 3d and prefent Viscount.

2d — William, born 23d June, 1750, member in the prefent parliament of Great Britain for St. Albans. Married, February 7, 1783, Mifs Sophia Hoare, daughter and coheir of the late Richard Hoare, of Baram, in Effex, Efquire, by whom he has iffue, a fon, born in 1785.

Barrington, Viscount Barrington.

HE hon. William Wildman Bar

;

Trington, Lord Viscount Barrington of Ardglass, and Baron Barrington of Newcastle, was born in 1717, and fucceeded his father, 14 Dec. 1734. His lordship ferved the Crown in the different departinents of Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary at War, Master of the great Wardrobe, Treasurer of the Navy, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, for upwards of 34 years. He is one of the Lords of the Privy Council in Great Britain, and late Member of Parliament for Plymouth. He married Mary, daughter and heirels of Henry Lovell, Efq; and widow of the hon. Samuel Grimfton, eldest fon of William, the firft Viscount Grimfton; and by her, who died in September, 1764, he had no furviving issue.

His lordihip's family is of Norman extraction, and was fettled there while the Kings of England were in poffeffion of that

duchy;
