Preface. EVERY age demands its own books-every age of the world, every age of an individual man. This book was written for the present age of the world, and for the young. There are old treatises on the Bible without number, of every class, profound and light, dull and even witty ; but very many of them, from the style both of language and of thought, are not exactly fitted to the present time, and therefore are found chiefly, periodically dusted, in the libraries of antiquarians and of theologians, who, for personal conviction, do not need them.
