ET us tell truth (and what advantage would it be to the curious reader, was I to damn my foul?) but the more care the incomparable father Torribio took to make thefe fubtleties clear to his pupils, the lefs our Friar Gerund comprehended them: not that he wanted parts and livelinefs, but becaufe his genius and inclination went towards the pulpit, which he fancied to be a more pleafing and lucrative road, and more conducive to the obtaining of reputation and applaufe; therefore all fcholaftical matters proved tedious, and he could not prevail upon himfelf to apply to them. Thus it was delightful to hear what confufed, intangled, and ridiculous notions he annexed to every fcientific word, as faft as they were uttered by his master. Le Fríre Géronde continue à étudier la Philofophie fans y rien comprendre, &c. ISONS la verité (et quel avantage en reviendroit au curieux lecteur fi je damnois mon ame?) Plus l'incomparable Père Torribio fe donnoit de peine pour faire comprendre à fes éléves ces fubtilités inutiles, moins nôtre Frére Géronde les comprenoit; non pas faute de talent et d'efprit, mais parce que fon génie et fon inclination l'entrainoient vers la chaire. Cette carrière étoit plus agréable, felon lui, plus lucrative, et plus propre pour obtenir de la reputation et des applaudiffemens; ainfi les matières fcholaftiques l' ennuyoient, et il ne lui étoit pas poffible de fe refoudre à s'y appliquer, et les étudier: de façon que c'étoit un plaifir de voir les idées confufes, embrouillées, et ridicules qu'il annexoit aux termes fcientifiques, à méfure qu'ils fortoient de la bouche de fon lecteur. Le Père vint à définir les termes métaphyfiques d'Etre, Subftance, Créature, Corps, &c. Mais envain s'égofilloit-il à enfeigner : enfeñar que todo lo que exifte es | that whatever exifts is a Be ente; fi fe ve y fe palpa es ente real, phyfico, y corporeo; fi no fe puede ver ni palpar porque no tiene cuerpo, (como el alma, y todo quanto ella Jola produce) es ente verdadero y real, pero efpiritual, immaterial, è incorporeo : fi no tiene mas sèr que que le dà la imaginacion y el entendimiento, es ente intellectual, ideal, è imaginario. èl Siendo efta una cofa tan clara, para Fray Gerundio era una algaravia, porque habiendo oìdo muchas veces en la religion, quando fe trataba de algun fugeto exotico y eftrafalario, vaya que effe es ente, jamàs pudo entender por ente otra cofa, que un hombre irregular o rifible por algun camino. Though all this was very clear, yet to Friar Gerund it proved all an arrant gibberifh, because having oftentimes heard fince he was in the order, that odd and ridiculous perfons were called rare beings, never could he make out, that a being fignified any other thing but a man any way odd and ridiculous. And thus, after having heard from his mafter, that the proprieties of a being were contained in the letters of that barbarous word R.E.U. B.
