At my Return to London, and converfing with my theatrical Friends, they foon perfwaded me to proceed in this Work, which I had made fome Progress in. Their Encouragement, and too much Leifure, prompted me on. But befides the hiftorical Account of thefe Twentyfeven Years paft, and the various Anecdotes within that Period, they demanded of me to give them a Lift of the first Set of Actors within my Memory, and, after defcribing their several Merits, to draw a Comparison between them, and the prefent Set of Performers, that are the Delight of the Public.
