"Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin." Eccles. v. 6.

GENTLE thoughts and gentle words

Ever were thy Saviour Lord's.

Shall the fellow worm reprove,
When the Holy God is Love?
Spirits harsh and words unkind,
Like to rough ungentle wind,
Often scatter "precious seed,'
Often break the "bruised reed."
He who knew the thoughts of men,
He was gentle; let us then
Gentle be in thought and tone,
We, who scarce can read our own.

Monsell.

"Take fast hold of instruction

for she is thy life."

AH me! it is a woeful thing

keep her,

Prov. iv. 13.

Never to hear the blessed word,

'Till sparks, that else might heavenward spring,
Die out for want of being stirr'd.

How heeding not God's blessed day,
All days grow godless as they fall,
And he who has no hour to pray,
Forgets at last, to pray at all!

C. F. Alexander.

"Take heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently." Deut. iv. 9.

COM

OME thou with breast from pride and passion freed,

Hands which no stain of guilt has ever soil'd, Feet swift and strong for every gentle deed, Faith, hope, and truth, by sordid crowds unspoil'd;

Come with a spirit full of generous love

For all beyond, and all below the skies Make ready thou, for Him who reigns above, The Christian's gift—a Living Sacrifice.

"Take no heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee.'

L

Eccles. vii. 21.

AY not to heart whate'er of ill

Thy foes may falsely speak of thee,

Let man defame thee as he will,

God hears and judges righteously;

Why should'st thou fear, if God be on thy side, Man's cruel anger, or malicious pride?

We know for us a rest remains,

When God will give us sweet release, From earth and all our mortal chains, And turn our sufferings into peace. Sooner or later death will surely come To end our sorrows and to take us home. Paul Gerhardt.
