PREFACE.

IN the publication of this work it has been the design of the publisher to
give a faithful representation of the government, institutions, manufactures,
and business of the State. How well this object has been accomplished, the
public will best decide.

It cannot be expected, however, that a volume, embracing such a variety

of information, can be entirely free from errors. The fact that this is the

first compilation will be favorably considered, if some slight ones should be

noticed.

This work is similar in character to the "MASSACHUSETTS REGISTER," and
is the first "RHODE ISLAND REGISTER ever published, embracing so great
a variety of important information. A work, however, was published in 1818,
and continued till 1832, by H. H. BROWN, publisher of the Providence Direc-
tcry, similar to it in some respects, but containing no Business Directory,
called the "Rhode Island Register and United States Calendar."
The usefulness of the work will doubtless be apparent to every one. The
labor and difficulty of compiling it, have been very much lessened by the
cheerful cooperation and generous encouragement of those engaged in active
business, and also by the ready assistance of State, County, and Town officers.
The engravings will add something to the business appearance of the work,
and we hope in future numbers to be able, if suitable encouragement is
given, to add many improvements in this way, and make the work every way
worthy the increasing business and the growing enterprise of the State.
