Ten thousand thousand precious gifts

My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.

Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

When nature fails, and day and night
Divide Thy works no more,
My ever-grateful heart, O Lord,
Thy mercy shall adore.

Through all eternity to Thee
A joyful song I'll raise;
For oh, eternity's too short
To utter all Thy praise!

ABIDE WITH ME

BY HENRY FRANCIS LYTE

Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens: Lord, with me abide!
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away:
Change and decay in all around I see;

O thou, who changest not, abide with me!

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,

But as thou dwell'st with thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free—
Come, not to sojourn, but 'bide, with me!

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings;
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings:
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus 'bide with me!

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And, tho rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me!

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me!

I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless:
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness,
Where is death's sting, where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies:
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee.
In life and death, O Lord, abide with me!

JUST AS I AM

BY CHARLOTTE ELLIOTT

Just as I am-without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid'st me come to Thee-
O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am and waiting not

To rid my soul of one. dark blot,

To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spotO Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-tho tossed about,
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without—
O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find-
O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve,
Because Thy promise I believe

O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone-
O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-of that free love,

The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, Here for a season, then above

O Lamb of God, I come!

NEARER HOME

BY PHOEBE CARY

One sweetly solemn thought
Comes to me o'er and o'er:

I am nearer home to-day

Than I ever have been before;

Nearer my Father's house,

Where the many mansions be;
Nearer the great white throne,
Nearer the crystal sea;

Nearer the bound of life,

Where we lay our burdens down;

Nearer leaving the cross,

Nearer gaining the crown!

But lying darkly between,

Winding down through the night,

Is the silent, unknown stream,
That leads at last to the light.

Closer and closer my steps

Come to the dread abysm;

Closer death to my lips

Presses the awful chrism.

Oh, if thy mortal feet

Have almost gained the brink;
If it be I am nearer home
Even to-day than I think;

Father, perfect my trust;

Let my spirit feel in death,
That her feet are firmly set

On the rock of a living faith!

THE PILGRIMS OF THE NIGHT

BY FREDERICK WILLIAM FABER

Hark! hark! my soul! Angelic songs are swelling

O'er earth's green fields and ocean's wave-beat shore; How sweet the truth those blessed strains are telling Of that new life when sin shall be no more!

Darker than night life's shadows fall around us,
And, like benighted men, we miss our mark;
God hides himself, and grace hath scarcely found us,
Ere death finds out his victims in the dark!
