EPITAPH WRITTEN IN 1728.

The Body

of
Benjamin Franklin

Printer
(Like the cover of an old book

Its contents torn out
And stript of its lettering and gilding)

Lies here, food for worms.

But the work shall not be lost
For it will (as he believed) appear once more
In a new and more elegant edition
Revised and corrected

by
The Author.*

* The foregoing epitaph was written by Dr. Franklin for himself, when he was only twenty-three years of age, as appears by the original (with various corrections), found among his papers, and from which this is a faithful copy. -W. T. F.

BIBLIOGRAPHY.

THE following list of works written by or about Franklin, though probably the fullest that exists, is, I am aware, far from complete. It may be doubted whether a complete one is any longer possible, for Franklin's writings and fame have so completely penetrated the literature of every nation and tongue as to defy the pursuit of the most zeal. ous and industrious bibliographer. For most of these titles I am in. debted to Sabin’s laborious “ Dictionary of Books relating to America, from its Discovery to the Present Time,” with which he has obligingly favored me with advance sheets. I have also enriched it from the Catalogue of the British Museum, from “ La France Littéraire,” by Que. rard, from “La Littérature Française contemporaine, 1827–1844," by Louandre & Barquelot, and from “ Bibliographie Biographique Universelle,” par Edouard Marie Oettinger, Brussels, 1854.

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by B. Franklin. 1744. Svo, pp. 37. Folded Plate.
