felf, and became obedient unto death, even the • death of the cross.' He did really die, and not feem to die only : Mark xv. 44. 45.'' And Pilate . marvelled if he were already dead; and calling • unto him the centurion, he asked kim whe“ther he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the

body to Joseph.' His Death was real, in that his Soul was separated from his Body: Luke xxiii. 43. ' And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in para. * dise'. verf. 46. And when Jesus had cried with • a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I • commend my spirit: and having said thus, he

gave up the ghost." Yet neither was his soul nor his Body separated from his divine Nature in his Death: Luke xxiii. 43. forecited. John XX. 13.

And they [the angels] say unto her, Woman, (why weepest thou? She faith unto them, Be• cause they have taken away my Lord, and I • know not where they have laid him. The Death he died, was the Death of the Cross : Phil. ii. 8.

He became obedient unto death, even the death s of the cross.? The Death of the Cross was a painful, shameful, lingering, and cursed Death. Christ's Death on the Cross was a painful Death, in that his Body was fixed to the Tree by Nails driven through his Hands and his Feet :'Luke xxiii. 33. And when they ere come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him.' Psal. xxii, 16. The wicked pierced my

hands and my feet. It was a shameful Death, in that he hung on the Cross stript of his Cloatha ing: Matth. xxvii

. 35. 'And they crucified him, ' and parted his garments, casting lots. Heb. xii. 2.

Jesus, for the joy that was set before him, en

dured the cross, despising the shame,' &c. What that Thameful hanging on a Tree had a particular Eye to, was our naked first Parents linning by eating the Fruit of a Tree. It was a lingering Death, in that the Wounds being in the extreme Parts of the Body, he was alive on the Cross, from the third to the ninth Hour : Mark XV. 25. 'And it

was the third hour, and they crucified him.' vers. 34.' And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with

a loud voice,' &c. It was a cursed Death, inasmuch as it was written in the Law, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree, Gal. iii. 13. Com. pared with Deut. xxi. 23. 'He that is hanged, is

accursed of God. The Curse denounced in the Law, on thofe hanged on a Tree, was a ceremo. nial Curse, not hindering the Salvation of Penitents : Luke xxiii. 33.

And when they were come ' to the place which is called Calvary, there they

crucified--the malefactors,' verf. 43. ' And Jea sus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To

day shalt thou be with me in paradise. But the Curle that lay on Christ in his Humiliation, was a real and substantial one, whereof the Tree of the Cross was but the Sign and Badge : Gal iii. 13. • Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of • the law, being made a curse for us : for it

is written, Cursed is every one that hang• eth on a tree.' The Instruments of the cruel Death Christ was put to, were the Jews and Romans : Acts iv. 27. For of a truth against thy

holy child Jefus, whom thou hast anointed, both « Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and

the people of Israel were gathered together.' But every Point of it was determined before, in the eternal Counsel between the Father and the Son, for the Salvation of Sinners, verf. 28. For ' to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel de

termined before to be done. Compared with Zech. vi. 13. ' Even he shall build the temple of

the Lord, and he shall bear the glory, and shall fit and rule upon his throne, and he shall be a priest upon his throne, and the counsel of peace

Thall be between them both. Howbeit, the wicked Instruments had no Eye to that in what they did: Afts xiii
