washed, and ready to set out to dry in the fun. Those who once try this fort of starch, will never make use of any other. It makes the linen very clear, and furprisingly beautiful. But when linen ftarched with this starch is ironed, it will be proper to rub the smoothing box or iron with a little wax, and then to wipe it with a clean linen cloth: precaution to which lawndresses are 10 strangers. GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE. Ince the colouring of prints to be viewed in optic glaffes has been fo nuch in vogue amongst us, we have imorted vast quantities of CARMINE from 'rance; very little being made here, nd that only by a few French about oho. It must therefore be very acceptble to many consumers of that coftly olour, to be acquainted with a better vay of making it than any the French hemselves ufe; especially as we have the rincipal ingredient, the fcarlet cloth, 1 much greater perfection than they. TAke Ake four or five gallons of clean water, and diffolve therein enough ot-afh to make a strong ley; which urify by filtering; and boil therein, in brafs pot, a pound of the clean fhreds f cloth dyed in grain, till it has quite oft its colour; then fqueeze the fhreds, nd pafs all the ley through a flannel ag; diffolve two pounds of alum in a roper quantity of water, and add this lution to the ley; ftir them well toether, and the whole will grow fomethat thick; then repafs it through the annel bag; the liquor will run out lear. But if it be at all tinged, boil it gain, with the addition of a little diflved alum; pafs it again, and all the armine will be left in the bag. Pour elh water, repeatedly, into the bag, ill all the alum be washed clean away. Then dry the colour, fo as no duft may ettle upon it, and keep it for ufe, having rft reduced it to an impalpable powder na glass or marble mortar. N. . If, in the boiling, you find fo nuch of the water evaporated as to requ're a fupply, you must not add cold, put boiling hot water. Anno 1744 ad amum 1750, cum fig. 4to.
