GRADATIM. An Easy Translation Book for Beginners.

The aim of this book is to provide translation for boys immediately on beginning Latin. With this view care is taken that the beginner encounters no difficulty of Grammar or Syntax without due warning.

PREFACE

THE following extracts are intended to provide work for boys who have read “Gradatim," or some similar First Translation Book, but are not yet ready to cope with all the difficulties of a Latin author. With this aim easy passages have been selected from classical writers, and these rendered easier by the omission of difficult sentences or parts of sentences, wherever possible, without destroying the sense.

In the Prose Selections, while care has been taken to avoid passages which are in common use at schools, so as not to interfere with future reading, pieces have been chosen either for their interest or historical value.

The Anecdotes, which have been placed first, will, it is hoped, prove useful for "Unseens," but for ordinary reading in form probably one of the longer selections will be found easier and more satisfactory. Short notes have been added where necessary, either to explain the text or fill up gaps in the history. A full Vocabulary has been added, but if it is preferred the book can be procured without it.

HILLBROW, RUGBY, July 1882.
