of your fervants and cattle? why do ye prophane God's temple by your irreverent behaviour? and why do ye exercise yourselves in fin and vanity? in wrong and robbery? in intemperance and debauchery? "why "do ye not" rather, do that which "is lawful to do on the fabbath

day?" why do ye not fhew kindnefs to your poor diftreffed brethren? why do ye not reverence God's fanc tuary, and praise him in the great congregation? why do ye not read and meditate on his holy word? and why do ye not inftruct and pray with your families?

These rebukes, it must be own'd, are very fevere. But your own confciences muft determine whether they are juft; or which of all these terri

ble accufations you are guilty of? and it is your indispensable duty, as you value your own intereft, and as you fear the indignation of God, to reform what you know to be amifs to fanctify the fabbath day by keeping it holy.

I might, if it were neceffary, produce many paffages of fcripture, wherein God threatens to deftroy those nations that prophane his fabbaths; but the time will not permit ; and it is fufficient to affure us that God will most certainly punish our neglect, or reward our obedience, in that He hath commanded us to keep holy the fabbath day.

Which that we may all do, God of his infinite mercy grant, through

Jefus Chrift our Lord.

SERMON VIII.

I. COR. XV. 22.

For as in Adam all die, even fo in Chrift fhall all be made alive.

N this juftly celebrated chapter of St. Paul, which contains the most important truths, the closest argument, and the fublimeft diction; there is not a verse of more weight than the text; it contains two of the clearest propofitions in the world.

ift. In Adam all die.

2dly. In Chrift fhall all be made alive.

As

As full and plain a declaration of our mortality, and immortality, as we can defire, and highly becoming the dignity of that great apostle.

These are points, my brethren, at all times feafonable; but this day, which is appointed for the commemoration of our Saviour's refurrection, especially demands a more particular attention to the fecond, "In Chrift fhall all be made alive." Wherefore let us beftow the short time that is allotted for a discourse of this nature in a serious reflection upon them. Would to God, that what I am going to deliver might make fuch an impreffion upon your minds, that the thoughts of your diffolution, and your immortality might more fre

quently

quently recur, than it is to be feared they really do. Or, in the words of

..

Mofes, O that ye were wife, that “ye understood this, that ye confider"ed your latter end!" Your latter end! Either a confummation devout♣ ly to be wished, or a period of life, terrible to human nature.

In Adam

In, or after the example of Adam, all die! Search from the beginning of time, to this generation; all have died except Enoch and Elijah, and what tranfmutation they underwent is not related. All have fubmitted (except our blessed Lord) to the irrevocable fentence, "Duft thou art, "and
