Tho' the King granted the Cardinal this laft mentioned Favour, yet he and his Minifters omitted not to make the most diligent Enquiry to find out any Eftate or Effects that belonged to his late Minifter, and when any appeared, they were immediately confifcated to the King's Ufe; the Form of the Inquifition we have here exhibited.*

Being willing graciously to provide, in this Behalf, for the Security of his Body, against the Malice of his faid Rivals, we, being favourably inclined to the faid Petition, out of our fpecial Grace, have taken and received, and by thefe Prefents • do take and receive the Body and Perfon of the aforefaid Cardinal, from the Day of the Date of thefe Prefents, during our Pleasure, into our Protection and Safeguard in the Manner and Form following, viz.

We forbid all and fingular our Subjects, and every of them, of what State, Degree, or Condition foever they may be, that they or any of them neither do, nor procure to be done, any Damage or Harm to the faid Cardinal's Body: And we < grant our firm Peace by thefe Prefents to the faid Cardinal during our Pleasure.

The King gives Directions for calling a Parliament.

land, held at Westminster, as gainft those who had obtained or follicited, or that caused to be follicited or obtained, front the Court of Rome, or elfewhere, Proceffes, Sentences, Excommunications, Bulls, Inftruments, or any thing of this Kind, which concern the Lord the King, against his Crown, Prerogative, or the Kingdom of England, and againit thofe who brought them into or received them, notified or executed any of them, in the faid Kingdom.

But before any of the Proceedings, we have been speaking of, were had against the Cardinal, the King gave Directions in the Month of Auguft, for calling a Parliament to meet on the 3d of Nov. and Mr. Cromwell was, by the Means of one Mr. Rufb, the Matter may the better beter the Conqueft, King of Engknown, into what and how ma⚫ny Manors; Lordships, Lands, • Tenements, Poffeffions, Rents, • Services, Reverfions, Advowfons, Patronages of Churches, Chapels, and other Ecclefiaftical • Benefices, Penfions, Portions, • Incomes, and all other Hereditaments whatsoever, which • the most Rev. Father in Christ, Thomas, Cardinal Prieft, Archbishop of York, and Primate of • England, was feized of and pof• feffed on the 28th Day of Auguft, in the 15th Year of our Reign, or on the 2d Day of the Month of Dec. in the fame • 15th Year of our Reign, or at any other Time after the faid • 2d Day of Dec. either alone, or jointly with any other Perfon or Perfons, as a Fief, or Re• verfion; or for the Term of his Life or Years, or otherwise • in the faid County. On which faid 2d Day of Dec. the fame • Cardinal in our Court before us was legally, lawfully, and juftly conoitred, and stands condemned for divers Contempts, • Tranfgreffions and Offences against us, our Crown, Prerogative, and Dignity; and against the Tenor of the Statute • made in the 16th Year of the Reign, and in the Parliament of the late Richard the Ild afVOL. On the 3d of November the Parliament

Proceedings of met at Black-friars, where, the King being feated upon his Throne in the Houfe of Lords, and the Commons attending, Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor, ftanding on his Majefty's Right-hand within, the Bar, opened the Caufe of calling them together with a Speech, in which he observed, as Hall has handed it to us, "That, like a good Shepherd, "which not only keepeth and attendeth well his Sheep, but also forefeeth and provideth for all Things, that might be either hurtful or noifome to his Flock, or may preferve and defend the "fame against all Perils that may chance to come; "fo the King, who was the Shepherd, Ruler, and "Governor of his Realm, vigilantly forefeeing Things
