So Jesus slept. God's only Son

Passed through the grave, and blessed the bed; Sleep, as He slept, till from His throne

Be heard the call, 'Awake, ye dead!'

Husbands and Wives.

104.

The Lord doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow. Deut. x. 18.

105.

The Lord will destroy the house of the proud; but He will establish the border of the widow. Proverbs xv. 25.

106.

Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 1 Timothy v. 5.

107.

Thus sayeth the Lord, Let thy widows trust in me. Jeremiah xlix. 11.

108.

A prudent wife is from the Lord. Proverbs xix. 14.

109.

Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Proverbs xxxi. 28.

110.

Still, Lord, to thee the voice of praise
Shall spring adoring from my breast;
For, though I tread life's weary ways,
I trust that he I mourn is blest.

111.

Why mourn, my soul, thy partner fled
O'er the dark river of the dead,

To Canaan's happy shore?

Rather anticipate the day

When God shall summon thee away,

To meet and part no more.

112.

Thou art gone to the grave, but 't were wrong to deplore thee,

For God was thy ransom, thy Guardian, thy Guide; He gave thee, He took thee, and He will restore thee, And death has no sting since the Saviour has died.

113.

* All gracious God! thy will be done,

'T was thou that didst the blessing lend;
And, though withdrawn, I'm not alone,
Thou art the Widow's faithful friend.-K.

114.

Farewell! farewell! yet not a long adieu,
For I, if faithful, soon may be with you
In blissful regions, where no sin, no pain,
Nor parting pangs shall sunder us again.
115.

Each moment since her dying hour,
My loss I keenly feel;

But trust I feel the Saviour's power
To sanctify and heal.

116.

O Lord, though, like a faded leaf

That's severed from its parent tree,
I struggle down life's stormy tide,
Yet am I still upheld by Thee.

117.

Let no sepulchral boast exalt my fame,

Or tell of virtues which adorned the wife,
Jesus, alone in thy dear saving name
The weary sinner finds eternal life;
Thy sacrifice my sole atoning plea,
Thy merits, Lord, alone shall speak for me.

118.

A tender mother and a virtuous wife,
Here sleeps in humble hope of better life,
By side of him she loved and cherished well;
We leave the judgment-day the rest to tell. †

119.

Lord, she was thine, and not my own,
Thou hast not done me wrong;
I thank thee for the precious loan
Afforded me so long.

120.

Once the blest partner of thine earthly love,

I yield thee to a dearer Friend above;

On Him I rest who all my woe can feel,

And trust the hand which gave the blow to heal.

121.

Husband, farewell! 't is thou must rear
Our Babes in God's most holy fear;
O teach their infant lips to pray,
And guide them in the narrow way;
So may we meet, renewed, forgiven-
No wanderer lost-a family in heaven.

From Things after Death.'

122.

So lately wedded, and so early taken,

Yet have I comfort in my heavy loss;
Neither in life nor death are they forsaken
Who look to Him that died upon the cross.†

123.

A lover of the Church, and constant guest
At his Redeemer's table, here has rest;
His sorrowing Partner dedicates this stone,
Trusting her reverent hope to Christ alone.†

124.

Submissive to thy will, my God,
To Thee my partner I resign;
And humbly bow before Thy rod,
I mourn, but dare not to repine.

125.

Lord! teach me to confide to Thee
The treasure Thou didst trust with me.

Christian Pastors.

126.

They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

Daniel xii. 3.

127.

Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Matthew xxv. 21.

From Things after Death.'

128.

Remember them which have had the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God; whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation, Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever. Hebrews xiii. 7, 8.

129.

I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 1 Corinthians iii. 6.

130.

Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians iii. 11.

134.

135.

Unskilful he to fawn, or seek for power
By doctrines fashion'd to the varying hour ;
Far other aims his heart had learned to prize,
More bent to raise the wretched than to rise.
