355.

The soul, reposing in assured belief,
Feels herself happy mid her every grief;
Forgets her labour as she toils along,
Weeps tears of joy, and bursts into a song.
356.

By faith we view the promised land,
And see our brethren there;
By faith we joined the heavenly band,
And hope their joys to share.

357.

God gave, and He hath ta'en away,
His righteous will be done!

Be ours His precepts to obey,

In faith our race to run.

358.

What though in lonely grief I sigh
For friends beloved, no longer nigh,
Submissive still I would reply-

Thy will be done!

359.

We think of those we love, passed o'er
Death's short but stormy tide;
They seem to stand on Canaan's shore,
And call us to their side.

360.

Sure confidence within us dwells,

Whate'er sad changes come;

The heart, though grieved, with hope still swells—

This world is not our home;

To us, unworthy, it is given

To trust in Christ and hope for heaven.

361.

We trust his soul has found a home
Among the faithful blest,

Where the wicked cease from troubling,
And the weary are at rest.

362.

O, how shall I complain

Of Him who rules above?

He sends no needless pain,

But always smites in love;

He looks in tenderest pity down,

E'en when he seems to wear a frown.

363.

* Christians shall Christians meet on high, When time and all its cares are o'er;

The flower in Adam doomed to die,

In Christ shall bloom and fade no more.

364.

J. E.

A bruised reed He will not break;
But hearts that bow before Him,
Shall own his mercy while they ache,
And faithfully adore Him.

365.

When Christians in their Saviour sleep,

Their crown is won, their warfare o'er ; Why should we then in anguish weep? They are not lost-but gone before.

366.

Though sorrowing anguish hearts may wring,
Though bosoms torn may be,

Yet suffering is a holy thing-
Without it what were we?

367.

The faithful spirit finds relief
In calm submissive love;
Consoled by grace amid its grief,
It waits for joys above.

368.

O Christian, whosoe’er thou art,
That readest this brief psalm,
As one by one thy hopes depart,
Be faithful, still, and calm.
Be patient in a world like this,

And thou shalt know ere long,
Know how sublime a thing it is
To suffer and be strong.

369.

Sweet corn of wheat, committed to the ground,
To die, and live, and bear more precious ear ;
While in the heart of earth thy Saviour found
His place of rest, for thee we will not fear.

Monitory.

372.

387.

A holy Judge-a righteous doom-
A bar where none dissemble-

A short quick passage to the tomb

How shouldst thou stop and tremble!

And ask thyself, as moments fly,
Am I prepared, or not, to die?

388.

Seek wisdom, mortal, while you may,
For swiftly time is flying;

The thoughtless man that laughs to-day
To-morrow may be dying.
