THIS is another of those fanciful agreements which players, in the progress of the game, sometimes enter into: namely, one player compels the other to give him stalemate, or in default to lose the game. To accomplish this kind of stale-mate, it is necessary to have one of your pawns upon one of the lines of the two castles, or else to detain one of your adversary's pawns upon the line of a castle or of a knight, and then place your men in a situation similar to those given in the following examples. It happens sometimes that you may not have been able to preserve either of your castle's pawns, and that neither are there any of the adversary's situated upon the lines of the castles or knights; in which case it is necessary to endeavour to bring one into such a situation (in order h not to lose the game), and this is the way to succeed: you are to stop the progress of the pawn, which you want to serve your purpose, and afterwards you force the pawn to take one of your pawns or pieces, and thereby bring him upon the line in order to compel your adversary to give you stale-mate. It is to be observed that there are not more than three situations by which the present object can be obtained ; and moreover, that it cannot be at all effected unless you have a queen. No. 114. 1.
