PREFACE

The phenomenal growth of examinations conducted by the University of the State of New York is almost entirely due to the revised system of 1891 and well illustrates the ease with which the schools respond to new requirements. The fifth examination in 1893 was held at 386 different points in the state and required 277000 question papers, an increase of 62000 over those printed for the corresponding examination in 1892. As the use of the examinations is entirely voluntary with each school, the growth indicates that the question papers, notwithstanding recognized imperfections, give general satisfaction.

Last year an official annual volume, containing all question papers of the preceding academic year, was issued for the first time. The value of this experiment is demonstrated by the fact that the edition of 1000 copies has been completely exhausted. It is deemed advisable, therefore, to publish for the academic year 1893 a similar annual, which will be sent postpaid to any address for 50c, receipts being used to pay for binding and for part of the printing.

Those unfamiliar with this examinations' system will find a full explanation in the annual handbook, which is sent free to applicants.

The question papers in academic subjects are those used for regents' credentials in New York academies and high schools. The medical examinations are those prescribed by law for license to practise medicine in New York state.

The law examinations are those given to candidates for the degree of LL. B.

The extension papers represent examinations given in regents' centers at the end of the course of 10 lectures.
