INTRODUCTION.

IN order to explain the fenfe of words and phrafes in the New Teftament, it is neceffary to keep in mind, that the books which compofe this volume were written by Jews; that Jefus Christ, the mediator of the New Covenant, and his apostles, were born of, and educated under, Jewish parents and inftructors; that they were habituated to the perufal and veneration of the Jewish Scriptures; and to the practice. of Jewish rites; and that the Gospel was first preached to Jews, by Christ himself and by his Apostles. It muft alfo be particularly attended to, that the Mofaic difpenfation was a part of the great plan of Divine Providence for training mankind in the knowledge and worship of the one only true God, and the practice of piety and virtue.
