William Shakspere is a biography of perhaps the world's most famous playwright, better known as William Shakespeare. A mysterious and sometimes controversial figure, who used several different spellings of his own name throughout his life (including Shakspere) the actor and playwright is well worth taking the time to study.

The book opens with a brief preface from the author, in which Knight openly states that information about the life of William Shakespeare is relatively scant. Thus, Knight states his work, "has been endeavoured to associate Shakspere with the circumstances around him, in a manner which may fix them in the mind of the reader by exciting interest." The work proceeds in a fashion that informs the reader as much about Shakespeare's environment as about the man himself. The text is divided into two "books", with book one dealing primarily with the poet's early years and book two discussing Shakespeare at maturity and some of his great works. Much of the work is conjecture, with entire chapters devoted to the author offering his opinion on certain questions about Shakespeare's life.

William Shakspere: A Biography is an entertaining book. It is a noble early approach to documenting the life of a man whose history remains muddled to this day. The book is exhaustive and at more than five hundred pages it touches on a wide range of topics. While some of the biographical details presented by Knight have since been called into question, the overall picture the book provides remains in line with more modern sketches of the man.

William Shakspere: A Biography is a title that will appeal to fans of The Bard's work and anybody interested in biographical writings. It is a detailed examination of one of the world's great artists.
