DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY

OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF FOR MILITARY OPERATIONS

WASHINGTON, D.C. 20310

FOREWORD

This pamphlet of bibliographic material on the Pacific islands has been
compiled by research analysts of the US Army Library in response to a
continuing need for sources of current information on that area. To
many Americans, mention of the Pacific islands evokes the image of palm
trees, grass skirts, endless beaches and primitive cultures. These
obviously exist, but such a simplistic picture of a complex area is
misleading. Pacific Oceania is an area of change where the traditions
and institutions of centuries are rapidly being discarded or changed
in hope of achieving progress and modernization in a very short period
of time.

World attention has focused on the Pacific islands as a result of
historic events that have occurred in that area since the turn of the
century and which were of significance to both Asia and the rest of
the world. It is certainly in the best interest of the United States
that military and civilian officials at all echelons of government
keep abreast of the many changes in Pacific Oceania.
A fuller compre-
hension of the region, its peoples and current trends is important if
we are to deal intelligently with the complex events to take place in
that area of the world in the future.

ANALYSTS' NOTE

This select bibliography was prepared at the request of the Director, International and Civil Affairs, ODCSOPS, United States Army.

It is based on unclassified publications, available, for the most part, on the open shelves of the Army Library, The Adjutant General's Office, Pentagon. Materials from other libraries in the Washington, D.C. area, are designated by symbols.

The selected materials are reflective of the strategic, political, economic, and sociological aspects and are supported by 26 appendixes consisting of pertinent data and maps.

In selecting the materials for inclusion in this bibliography, the Analysts of the Army Library attempted to present a balanced picture of the problems and prospects in the Pacific Islands in general and in the Trust Territories of the Pacific in particular. Whenever possible only materials covering the period 1965-1970 were included, since older publications appeared in bibliographies prepared elsewhere.

No effort has been made to delete or exclude references by reason of their controversial nature. On the other hand, inclusion of entries does not represent an official endorsement of the views expressed.

The Analysts gratefully acknowledge the assistance and cooperation of the various specialists in the Department of the Army, and other Federal Agencies. Special appreciation is extended to the U.S. Army Topographic Command and to the Central Intelligence Agency for their excellent maps. AWC-Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania
