[blocks in formation]

* Black plays this Pawn, with the view afterwards of pushing K. Kt. P. upon the White Kt. If he had pushed Kt. P. before he had played this, White ought to move Kt. to K. R. 4th, arresting the progress of the Black pawns.

+ If, instead of playing this, Black had given check with R. P. it would have been bad play, and contrary to the instruction previously given.

[blocks in formation]

* This Kt. is played to induce the adversary to take it, but it would be bad play to do so.

[blocks in formation]

* If Black had taken the White pawn, his game would have been much weakened, because his Kt. had then been supported by one pawn only instead of two, and he would have been forced to withdraw K. Kt. when attacked, in order to save the pawn that sustained it.

+ If not it will be the same.

[blocks in formation]

* Withdrawing K. to B. sq. renders it impossible for the adversary to preserve the Gambit's Pawn, which will be always liable to be taken.
