PREFACE.

MANY letters have reached me, testifying to the great utility of the FIRST COURSE of the TRAINING EXAMINER, and expressing the desire of their writers for the more extended or SECOND COURSE ; and I am happy to say that the sale of the former appears to warrant the issuing of the latter.

The questions in this book-over NINE HUNDRED in number, including the Test Papers-are of a higher range than those contained in the FIRST COURSE, and bear upon every part and detail of the subject.

"Pains

As stated in the Preface to the FIRST COURse, have been taken to avoid repeating in the Test Papers. any question precisely in the same form in which it stands in the body of the EXAMINER. Similarity there must of necessity be; but identity, I think, will not be found." I may add, that the same care has been taken to preserve this SECOND COURSE from identity with the FIRST.

HINTS ON THE USE OF THIS BOOK.

(As given in the FIRST COURSE.)

THE plan recommended for use is, that the pupils first go through the EXAMINER with their Grammar-books * before them; in fact, get up their lessons with the aid of the Questions. After this shall have brought them accustomed to write their answers, they may be required to furnish replies to questions without having their textbooks to refer to, taking them either consecutively or by selection of the teacher. It needs not be shown how this book may be made available for the ordinary periodical school examinations.

Every answer should be given in the form of a complete sentence. Mere words or phrases should not be accepted.

*

Though reference is made in the questions (by numerals) to specified books, yet the EXAMINER may be used with any ordinary school grammar, simply by the teacher's intimating to the pupils the pages on which the information required may be found.
