tors be British subjects, or Portuguese subjects, or French subjects; if an address is to be presented, or a dinner eaten, or a farewell taken, all is one to our ready talker. Up he gets, and in the most spokesman-like fashion delivers himself upon the sum of affairs. Is he upon a beer-barrel or a tub in Liverpool? He descants upon the happy state of that well-represented city, where there are thousands of voters. Is he upon a table at Manchester? He expatiates upon the happiness of 100,000 inhabitants having no votes at all; shows them that "unrepresented Manchester is safe in represented Liverpool," with a good deal more, to the like purpose (whatever that may be), nd equally well adapted to the great emporium of stuff and fustian. Is he underground in

Cheshire? He charms the saline multitude with many a laboured comparison between the briny produce of the cave and the savoury dainties of the surface. Rising with his subject, at Lisbon he harangues upon the Braganzas; and at Bordeaux he stops, on his way to Plymouth, to state his sentiments upon the restoration of the Bourbons, and the general policy of Europe.

One quality he has, which we wish other ora

tors had always imitated. He takes care that the public shall have his speeches, from the largest to the smallest, correctly printed under his own immediate inspection. From one of those delivered at Liverpool, and first corrected, or rather written by himself at the time, afterwards republished in a separate volume, we extract the following passage, which is important, as giving the most complete contradiction to the absurd rumours now

afloat of his intention to take office with Lord Castlereagh. See p. 25, of the Collection referred to.

"I declined office (i. e. the office of Secretary of State, which he immediately before says, had twice been offered to him in six months), because it was tendered to me on terms NOT CONSISTENT, as I thought, and as my immediate friends agreed in thinking, WITH MY PERSONAL HONOUR." After reading this, how can any one believe the story of his taking the Board of Control, with the same Lord Castlereagh, leader of the House of Commons, and the same Lord Liverpool, Prime Minister?

There is but one place apparently, in which our Ambassador is shy of showing himself-we

mean the House of Commons.

Somehow or other, he is not to be found there.-His children are always ill; or the climate of Cintra is agreeable; or Bordeaux is a sweet spot, and the wind is a point to the Northward; but the result is, that our longing eyes seek him in vain. Perhaps, were he suffered to stand on the bench instead of the floor, or even to get up on the table, he might be induced to re-appear in Parliament, at least after he shall have well and duly harangued the "Town and Dock" at Plymouth ; and stopped at Exeter to say a few words on the recent proceedings in those parts. Portsmouth, too, is only one hundred and fifty miles out of the way; and a speech at the back of the Point would be at once natural and affecting. That he will sojourn for a short space at Bath is highly probable, from the facilities for elocution which that fashionable resort of “Ladies and Gentlemen' presents. But at all events, his appearance at several of our most distinguished Bazaars is confidently anticipated. After which, he may reach St. Stephen's just as the Black Rod enters.

SIR THOMAS ACKLAND'S GRAND ENTERTAINMENT.

May 27, 1816.

On Saturday last, Sir Thomas Ackland gave a splendid dinner to the Prince Regent's Ministers, and a large party of Parliamentary Friends. With that good taste which is so eminently his character, he lost no opportunity of delicately complimenting his Ministerial friends: and even his Bill of Fare, furnished by the Carlton House Cook, breathed the language of Saintly flattery-as it was received with great applause by the company, we have obtained a copy, and present it to our readers
