During the whole period that Colonel Richard M. Johnson filled the office of Vice President and President of this body, he was allowed a clerk, and the office was not dispensed with until a President pro tempore was elected. Indeed, it was not until I had the honor to discharge the duties of that office that the employment of a clerk was deemed unnecessary.
