O GOD, thou art from everlasting to everlasting. One day is with thee as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. thy people at all times. thee? We yield to the that we consult our best interests in thus coming into thy presence. Oh teach us how to pray, and accept, for the Redeemer's sake, the praises that we offer. We hope in thy mercy. O Lord, let us not be disappointed. Thou hast been the refuge of To whom can we go, but to claims of duty, and we feel Another day has borne its testimony to thy faithfulness and thy mercy. We have gone out and in safely, for thou hast watched over our path. We have engaged with comfort in the business of the day, for thou, Lord, hast been with us. Make us very thankful for these blessings; but we have yet greater gifts to praise thee for. Thou hast given us Christ; thou hast instructed us out of thy word, and we can pour out our hearts in prayer before thee. We would not be unmindful of thy goodness. We would not abuse it. O Lord, let thy goodness lead us to repentance. We review this day, and are ashamed and humbled before thee. Thou hast been kind, but how little have we done in acknowledgment of thy kindness! how much have we done and thought that has been offensive in thy sight! Our iniquities take hold upon us, so that we are ashamed to look up. O Lord, be merciful to us and blot out all our transgressions, cleanse us afresh in the blood of atonement. Make us to taste the blessedness of the man whose transgression is forgiven, and whose sin is covered. Reckon not against us our misdeeds. We hope in thee. We come to thee through the Mediator. Oh grant to us thy Spirit for his sake. May we become thy children. Make us holy. Let the Spirit of God bear witness with our spirits, that we are thy saints. For thy favour we could part with any earthly good. O Lord, grant us thy favour, and bestow upon us the gifts of thy salvation. And may we have hearts to make thee known, and do thou in mercy bless our efforts to impart thy salvation to those around us. And let the world be blessed with the knowledge of thy mercy in Jesus Christ. Hast thou not said that the word of the Lord shall go forth from Zion, and that people of all nations shall say, Let us go unto the mountain of the Lord's house. We will walk in his ways and keep his statutes. O Lord, send out thy light and truth. Let thy Spirit go with all ministers and missionaries to the very ends of the earth; and from the rising of the sun to its going down, let incense and a pure offering be presented to thee continually. Have us under thy watchful keeping to-night. Thine eyes never sleep. Oh, be thou about our bed as thou hast been about our path. Let no evil overtake us; or if what we deem calamity do befall us, and if with any of us this night prove our last below, may we wake with God, to be for ever blessed. O God of our salvation, hear the voice of our cry, and let our prayer come before thee. Bless us now and for evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. JOHN I. 1--31. MORNING HYMN. "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God." THERE is an hour of peaceful rest, There is a home for weary souls, When toss'd on life's tempestuous shoals, And all is drear but heaven. There faith lifts up her cheerful eye, There fragrant flowers immortal bloom, JOHN I. 35-51; II. 1—12. EVENING HYMN. "In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." My God! is any hour so sweet, From blush of morn to evening star, The hour of prayer. Blest be that tranquil hour of morn, eve, And blest that hour of solemn For then a day-spring shines on me, Than earth can know. Then is my strength by thee renew'd ; With hopes of heaven. Words cannot tell what blest relief Here for my every want I find; What strength for warfare, balm for grief; What peace of mind. Oh, till I reach yon peaceful shore, No privilege so dear shall be, As thus my inmost soul to pour O LORD, thou art a great God, and a great King above all gods. The idols which the heathen worship cannot hear when men cry unto them, neither can they save such as trust in them; but thou art our strength and our shield. Thine eye is ever on us, thine ear is open to our prayer, thy hand is present to help us. O Lord, we come to thee as dependent creatures. Thou hast bestowed mercy upon us hitherto; we need mercy still. Oh be gracious to us, for the Redeemer's sake, and let our cry come before thee. We thank thee for the assurance that thou art ever more ready to hear than we are to pray. Thou hast placed us in the situation and circumstances in which we are. We acknowledge thy hand in the ten thousand mercies of that situation, nor would we overlook thy hand in the trials we experience. By all thy discipline thou, O God, art teaching us our dependence upon thee; and we learn from the uncertainty and the disappointments of life that we can be happy only as we have thee for our God. Let not the lesson be lost upon us. While we are diligently occupied in our daily calling, may we more diligently still seek thy favour which is life, and thy loving-kindness which is better than life. Oh forgive our numerous iniquities. Restore us to thyself, through Jesus Christ. We would yield our hearts to thee. Oh, accept us through his mediation. Let not temptation turn aside our steps from thy ways. Permit us never to seek happiness in |
