XLVI.-1. egelidos] 'Devoid of cold.' E has sometimes a privative force in composition, as exspes, exlex, expers. Cookesley quotes the doubtful passage in Virg. Aen. viii. 610, Ut procul egelido secretum flumine vidit,' in which the word is interpreted cold. Heyne, Jahn, and Wagner read et gelido. Forbiger, however, has restored the old reading eyelido. The word egelidus was certainly used in the sense of very cold by later writers.
