PRONUNCIATION OF PROPER NAMES

[This list contains all proper names about the pronunciation of which pupils would be in doubt. Diacritical marks are employed as in Webster's dictionaries. Names from Hiawatha are, as a rule, omitted. The meter of the verse indicates their accentuation, and the poet has made the spelling represent clearly the vowel sounds. It should be remembered, however, that in this poem accented u should be given its long sound (as in use).]

BOOK II

A PRACTICAL ENGLISH GRAMMAR 12mo Cloth xiv +396 pages 60 cents net

The books of this course aim to give the young (1) ability to express their own thoughts and to understand the thoughts of others; (2) a clear insight into the structure of the English sentence; (3) effectiveness in the use of language; (4) an appreciation of its higher uses in literature.

On its formal side the plan of the first book is as follows: Part I is devoted to the sentence, which from the first is treated as a part of connected discourse. Part II consists of an elementary but inviting treatment of letter writing. Part III again takes up the sentence, looking more clearly at its parts and uses.

The second book is also divided into three parts: I. The uses of words, phrases, and clauses in sentences; II. The modifications and relations of parts of speech; III. Lessons in oral and written composition, to be studied in connection with the texts of the first two parts.
