EXPLANATIONS OF STITCHES AND TERMS.

FOR CROCHET.

CHAIN STITCH is made by forming a loop, and drawing one loop through the other.

De, or DOUBLE CROCHET, is made by inserting the hook through the loop, and drawing the cotton through, then draw the cotton through the two loops; there will then be one loop on the hook.

LONG STITCH is made by first twisting the cotton over the hook, then insert the hook into the loop, draw the cotton through, then through two loops, and again through two; there will then be one loop on the hook.

In working the patterns be careful to observe the difference between the words "into" and "under" the chain the former means "into the loop," while the latter is worked into the space under the loop. L, long stitch; De, double crochet; Ch, chain; Sq, square.

TO UNITE OR JOIN FLOWERS, LEAVES, OR SCALLOPS TOGETHER.— -Simply draw the cotton through from the loop of one scallop, leaf, or flower, through the one already worked.

TO UNITE FROM THE LEFT-HAND FLOWER, &C. INTO THE RIGHT-HAND FLOWER, &c.— Withdraw the hook from the loop, insert it into the loop of right-hand flower, draw the loop from whence the hook was withdrawn through, then continue working the left-hand flower.

THE HOOK.-In working Crochet, to obviate the appearance of the work running on one side, great care should be taken to hold the hook the true way; that is, holding it in the hand like a knife, letting the termination of the handle come in the middle or palm of the hand, and the finger and thumb be held nearly opposite to each other on that portion of the handle where the steel part commences, taking care to avoid touching the steel. If this is attended to, the work will never look irregular, nor will the wrist ever ache; also, the hook should regulate the size of the stitches, as Crochet should never be worked loosely, but as tightly as the hook will permit, unless it be where a succession of other stitches are to be worked into the chains, then these chains must be worked quite as loose again. The size of the long stitches in all cotton work under No. 20 Cotton, should measure nearly a quarter-of-an-inch; above that, one-eighth of an inch; 4-thread Berlin wool, more than a quarter-of-an-inch; 8-thread wool, proportionately long, and fleecy the same. Avoid using bone, ivory, or wood hooks, excepting it be for 6 or 8-thread fleecy, which is seldom used, then the ivory hooks are preferable, as being lighter to hold, and this size fleecy not requiring any delicacy of work.

For directions how to wash, damp, and press Crochet, refer to 1st Series "Short-way Edging Book."

In describing a pattern, where the term Sq, or Squares, is used, for the sake of brevity, and to facilitate the working, the open work between the thick parts of the pattern, and on each side of it, is termed "Sq," or " Squares;" each Square to be worked thus:-1 L, or Long; 2 Ch, or Chain; 1 L into 3rd loop; and 1 L on L, 2 Ch, repeat. This will be readily understood when it is observed that, almost always, the first rows are composed entirely of Squares. Observe also this, that whatever number of Squares are directed, they must be fully completed, and the last long stitch of the last Sq must not be reckoned in with whatever number of L stitches are directed; for instance, if 4 Sq, 8 L is directed, then the 8 L must be made without any reference to the last L formed by the last L of the 4 Sq; therefore there will be the appearance of 9 L, instead of 8; but observe also, that after the 8 L are completed, if two, one, or any number of Squares are directed, the last long of the 8th will form the 1st of the Sq (it will be worked thus, 8 L, 2 Ch, 1 L, or L, &c.)

Commence always every row with 5 Ch; this is equivalent to 1 L, 2 Ch (this must be reckoned as 1 Sq in the succeeding row); leave an end of cotton at the beginning, a full half or threequarters of a yard in length, and at the termination of the 2nd row, in the last stitch, weave in the short end left in last row.

At the beginning of another row, join on the end of cotton from the reel on to the end that was left out at the beginning of last row. Do this with a weaver's knot, and be careful that the knot is hidden in a long stitch and not in a chain. The cotton that is left at the beginning of a row should be of various lengths, or the knots will always come in one place, which must be avoided.

FOR KNITTING.

K, means knit.-K 2 +, means knit 2 together.—P, means pearl.—Tf, means thread forward.

63rd.-1 row of squares.

64th.—Turn back, 4 double L, made by first twisting the cotton twice over the hook, then 4 double long to come in the 1st 4 loops, which will exactly fill up the 4 loops over 1st Sq, then 5 Ch, miss 2 squares, 4 more double long in the 4th loop of next Sq, repeat, the row will end with 1 long stitch, turn back.

65th.—5 Dc under the 5 Ch, 4 Ch, repeat. This forms the front of the Case.

For the Back.-Commence on the wrong side of the foundation chain, and work 41 rows of squares, then work as at 42nd row, and continue working till the end of 62nd row.

Now 2 rows of Squares.

Now a row of double long stitches the same as the row on the other end. Turn back.

1 Double L on L, * 5 Ch, 4 double L on the L, repeat from *.

Now a row of long stitches, not double long.

Now work 3 De into every space up both sides, then crochet both sides together on the right side, by working 1 De stitch into every loop of both sides, first doubling it at the foundation chain, consequently the back will be a trifle higher than the front.

Now, up the side and along the top of the back, work thus:-1 L in 1st loop, *9 Ch, 1 L into 7th loop, repeat from *, and at each corner make 2 L into 1 loop, with 9 Ch between each L.

Next row, 9 De under every 9 Ch.

Cover 2 strips of narrow whalebone the exact length of the back of the Case, with coloured ribbon, and run it into the 2 open rows; for the front, cut a length of whalebone 2 inches longer than the pieces for the back, and run in the front row, then add ribbon and bow as in Engraving.

A LADY'S NIGHTCAP IN CROCHET.

BY MRS. WARREN.

"The increasing taste evinced by the 'Women of England' for 'Crochet,' is a good illustration of the progress of 'timethrift.' Nevertheless, we would guard our fair friends not to be TOO crotchetty in their choice of occupation."
