with due refpect; and you are likewife to continue the 1739 duties appropriated for their ufe, according to the ufual cuftom. You are not to convert the Bramins, houfes into thofe of the Bandaravada or the Soodra caft. If any people belonging to my Circar makes his escape to your place, you are not to protect him; on the contrary you fhould deliver him up to me, that I may punish him according to his deferts.

You are to perform the above articles, enjoy the 8 villages aforefaid, and make yourself happy.

A Copy of a Grant made by Pertaupa Sing, King 1742 of Tanjore, to Monfieur Dupleix, the Governor of Pondicherry; dated Moon Ralealevel the 22d, and in the Year of the Marattas, 1143, answering 27th May, 1742, and in the Malabar file Dundooley Samavecheram.

Whereas you have hitherto enjoyed the 8 villages

which have been fold in the time of Monfieur Demaux for 60,000 Checrams, but as you have now represented to me, that a frequent difpute happens concerning fome of the faid villages, with regard to the watercourse, with the people of my Circar, requefting me at the fame time to receive back three of thofe villages, and to give you in the room of them fome other villages adjacent, anfwering equally to the revenues of the faid three villages; I agree to receive back thofe three villages, and in the room of them grant you the four vil lages, and a fpot of ground called Padaga, as hereunder written, which being added to the remaining 5 of the former, makes in number 9 villages, and one Padaga.

What you returned back out of the 8 villages, given you on 27th Auguft, 1739, is as follows:

Out of Termaga Magan, Condugam, and Tannacuttal.
Out of Carrical Magan, Moratta Goody.

In all three villages.

The remaining 5 villages of the former, being an follows:

1742 Out of Termaga Magan, at Ambel, Tarcavat Wanjeywoor.

Out of Ternallar Magan, Narvey and Darmaporam. Out of Carrical Magan, Wooliapetto and Polagam Ninycatta.

What is now granted in lieu of the three villages returned back, and equal to their revenues.

Out of Arangoly Padagumt, Sumet Adambarupet Polagam, Padaga Wodayore.

Out of Nadangad Magan at Tarekvet, Covilpet, Walarmarcad and Kealacufandgody.

Out of Cotachery Magan, at Wadachvet, Taly Tura.

Thefe four villages, and one Padaga, being added to the above remaining 5, makes the number 9 villages and one Padaga; which I hereby acknowledge to have been fold for the 60,000 Checrams, mentioned in the former bill of fale. The terms agreed on are as follow:

With regard to the Pagodas in the faid villages, you are to pay their allowances according to Salabad cuftom, and take care that the worship and the celebration of the feaft of Rodachevam may be performed with due refpect, and you are likewife to continue the duties appropriated for their use, according to the ufual cuftoms, as well as the Marians, or free gift of lands relating to the gods of the Bramins; and as there are feveral Tanks belonging to thefe, you must not fuffer the Europeans to go into them; you fhould fupport the Bramins in the rites and duties of their caft as has been usual. If any people belonging to my Circar makes his efcape to your place, you are not to protect him, on the contrary, you should deliver him up to me that I may punish him according to his deferts.

You are to perform the above articles, enjoy the nine villages and one Padaga as aforefaid, and make yourself happy.

It is also agreed, that Mr. Brouwer, who hath been before wrote to on the subject, be defired to affift Mr. Ruffel all in his power in pointing out to him the exact boundaries of limits of the places dependent on Carrical to be restored.

That the French fhall have no connexion with, of give any protection to Rajah Saib, or any of the late or future pretenders to the Carnatic or any part of it. The French fhall not on any pretence protect or encourage any difobedient fervants, fubjects, or depen dents on the Nabob, but fhall deliver them up. in cafe any fuch take thelter in their for nor fhall the

French aid or affift any tributary or dependent on the Nabob's government in rebellion or oppofition to the Nabob's claims and ordres; nor fhall they interfere with the managers or management of the Circars affairs, but in cafe of any complaints fhall apply to the Nabob for redrefs; on the contrary, they fhall remain quietly in their fettlements as merchants, and meddle with fuch affairs only as relate to their commerce.

2) The French fhall not, under any pretence, whatfoever, march any troops, either of natives or Europeans, or fend or permit to be fent any artillery or warlike ftores of any kind out of the limits of their fettlements through any of the countries dependent on the Nabob's government, without his permiffion being firft obtained.

3) The French having agreed on their parts inviolably to obferve the foregoing articles, and to be subject to the fame regulations obferved in former times under the government of the Nabobs, his predeceffors. The Nabob Serajah Dowlah will confirm them their former

1765 privileges in the countries under bis government, and on all occafions treat them and their dependents in a friendly manner.

4) But that he may be the better affured of their good faith and intentions, and the ftrict obfervance of all their engagements, the Nabob requires that his allies the English may become guarantees to him for the true and juft performance of all agreements which fhall be entered into..

Articles propofed to be fettled between the Rajah of Tanjore and the Representatives of the French Nation, or fuck as we think the Rajah ought to insist upon,

1) The French fhall acknowledge the King of Tanjore to be the only true and rightful Prince of that country. The French fhall not, under any pretence, protect or encourage any difobedient fervants, fubjects, or dependents on the King of Tanjore, but fhall deliver them up in cafe any fuch take fhelter in their fettlements, nor fhall the French aid or affift any tributary or dependent on the King of Tanjore's government, in rebellion or oppofition to the King's claims and ordres; nor fhall they interfere with the managers or management of the Circar's affairs, but in cafe of any complaints, fhall apply to the King for redrefs; on the contrary they fhall remain quietly in their fettlements as merchants, and meddle with fuch affairs only as relate to their commerce.

2) The French fhall not claim, or pretend to claim, any villages in the Tanjore kingdom but fuch as they poffeffed before the beginning of 1749, and which are now delivered up to them by the English, in confequence of the treaty of peace; and for these the fame annual tribute shall be paid as to the Rajah, his predeceffor.

3) The French fhall not, under any pretence whatfoever, march any troops, either of natives or Europeans, or fend, or permit to be fent, any artillery or warlike ftores of any kind out of the limits of their fettlements, through any of the countries dependent

4) The French having agreed on their parts inviolably to obferve the foregoing articles, and to be fubject to the fame regulations obferved in former times under the government of the Kings his predeceffors, the Rajah will confirm to them their former privileges in the countries under his government, and on all occafions. treat them and their dependents in a friendly manner,

5) The Rajah will confider whether he fhall demand the bond extorted from him in Eradmooden Cawn's time, if the faid bund, or any other, be in the cuftody of the French.

6) But that he may be the better affured of their good faith and intentions, and the strict obfervance of all their engagements, the King requires that his allies, the English, may become guarantees to him for the true and juft performance of all agreements which fhall be entered into.
