AUTHOR'S PREFACE

It is explained at the beginning of this Manual that its object is to stimulate the reader's interest in the more purely artistic qualities of works of Art. In the productions of Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting, the outside observer sees only the completed result in which all the elements are or should be-fused into perfect harmony; while the artist on his part has in view the various processes and conditions involved, and realises how the creative faculty of the designer has gradually

worked the whole into a unity.

There is no reason why

the real aims and conditions of artistic work should not be understood and appreciated as widely as are the literary considerations which attach to subject pictures and historical monuments, and it is hoped that the following pages may assist in bringing these aims and conditions more clearly within the ken of those who are interested in, but do not practise, the arts of form.

SAVILE CLUB,

July 1891.
