ARNOLD.-THE HISTORY OF ROME

Reprinted entire from the last London Edition. By THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D. Three volumes in one. 8vo. $3.

ARNOLD. THE LATER ROMAN COMMONWEALTH.

The History of the Later Roman Commonwealth. By THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D. 1 vol. 8vo. $2 50.

"Full and accurate as Niebuhr, but much more readable and attractive; more copious and exact than Keightley or Schmitz, and more reliable than Michelet, it has assumed a rank second to none in value and importance. Its style is admirable, and it is every where imbued with the truth-loving spirit for which Dr. Arnold was preeminent."-Examiner.

"In the preparation and composition of the history, Dr. Arnold expended many long years, and lent to it the whole force of his great energies. It is a work to which the whole culture of the man from boyhood contributed -most carefully and deeply meditated, pursued with all the ardor of a labor of love, and relinquished only with life. Of the conscientious accuracy, industry, and power of mind, which the work evinces-its clearness, dignity, and vigor of composition--it would be needless to speak. It is eminently calculated to delight and instruct both the student and the miscellaneous reader."-Boston Courier.

Sermons Preached in the Chapel of Rugby School, with an Address before Confirmation. By THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D. One volume, 16mo. 75 cts.

"There are thirty Sermons in this neat little volume, which we cordially recommend to parents and others for the use of the young, as a guide and incentive to deep earnestness in matters of religious belief and conduct; as a book which will interest all by its sincerity, and especially those who have become acquainted with Dr. A. through his Life and Letters, recently published by the Appletons."-Evening Post.

ARNOLD.—LECTURES ON MODERN HISTORY,

Delivered in Lent Term, 1842, with the Inaugural Lecture delivered in 1841. By THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D. Edited, with a Preface and Notes, by Henry Reed, M. A., Prof. of Eng. Lit. in the University of Pa. 12mo. $1 25.

"Professor Reed has added greatly to the worth and interest of the volume, by appending to each lecture such extracts from Dr. Arnold's other writings as would more fully illustrate its prominent points. The notes and appendix which he has thus furnished are exceedingly valuable. No student or literary man, who has the least regard for the philosophy of history, should be without this book. So far as our knowledge extends, there is no other before the public which can be compared to it for interest and permanent worth."-Courier & Enquirer.

ARNOLD.-THE LIFE AND CORRESPONDENCE OF THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D. By ARTHUR P. STANLEY, A. M. 2d American, from the 5th London edition. 8vo. $2.

"This work should be in the hands of every one who lives and thinks for his race and for his religion; not so much as a guide for action, as affording a stimulant to intellectual and moral reflection."-Prot. Churchman. "We have rarely had occasion to notice a work that we could so warmly and unreservedly recommend as this. *** The greater part of the volume consists of letters to familiar friends, on the thousand topics of general literature, religion, morals, history, and other matters of every day interest."-Buffalo Com. Adv. "His letters are deeply instructive and fascinating."-Albany Adv.

"It is a work in which the scholar, the philosopher, and the Christian will be alike interested."— Albany Argus.

"This volume will be highly prized by tutors and professors of every department, and will be found to be an edifying manual to all interested in the education of youth."-N. Y. Mirror.

"This course of lectures is an elegant memorial of the author whose unquenchable philanthropy and untiring zeal in behalf of the best interests of mankind render his decease the subject of regret to the civilized world."— N. Y. Herald.

"The volume of Miscellanies is a suitable counterpart to the 'Life and Correspondence of Dr. Arnold;' and scholars who have been so deeply interested in that impressive biography, will be gratified to ascertain the deliberate judgment of the author upon the numerous important themes which his Miscellaneous Works' so richly and clearly announce."-N. Y. Express.

ARNOLD'S CLASSICAL SERIES:

FIRST LATIN BOOK: re-modelled, re-written, and adapted to the Ollendorff Method of Instruction. By ALBERT HARKNESS. One vol. 12mo. 75 cts.

Several improvements have been introduced by Mr. H., and an effort made to simplify and render more clear the elementary portions of the work of Dr. Arnold. It is a capital book.

A FIRST AND SECOND LATIN BOOK AND PRACTICAL GRAMMAR. Re vised and carefully corrected, by J. A. SPENCER, A. M. One vol. 12mo. 75 ets.

A most admirable volume, based on the true principles of learning a language, viz., those of imitation and repetition.

LATIN PROSE COMPOSITION: a Practical Introduction to Latin Prose Composition. Revised and corrected by J. A. SPENCER, A. M. 12mo. $1.

Very exact, copious, and scientific; Latin synonymes are carefully illustrated, differences of idiom noted, cautions as to niceties pointed out, and every help afforded towards attaining a pure and flowing Latin Style.

CORNELIUS NEPOS; with Practical Questions and Answers, and an Imitative Exercise on each Chapter. Revised, with Additional Notes, by Prof. JOHNSON, Professor of the Latin Language in the University of the City of New-York. 12mo. A new, enlarged edition, with Lexicon, Index, &c. $1.

Very excellent, especially on account of the Exercises formed on the model of the text, by which the pupil becomes more thoroughly acquainted with the author and the language in general. A good vocabulary is attached.

FIRST GREEK BOOK, on the Plan of the First Latin Book. Revised and corrected by J. A. SPENCER, A. M. 12mo. 75 cts.

A new and very admirable volume prepared by Prof. Spencer from the work of Dr. Arnold. It is equally good with the First Latin Book, and carries out the same principles to their legitimate results.

GREEK PROSE COMPOSITION: a Practical Introduction to Greek Prose Composition. Revised and corrected by J. A. SPENCER, A. M. One vol. 12mo. 75 cts. Exact, clear, direct, and copious. It is intended for use at a rather early stage, viz., directly following the First Greek Book, or simultaneously with the Greek Reading Book.

GREEK PROSE COMPOSITION. Part II. A Practical Introduction to Greek Prose Composition. Part II. (The Particles.)

In this volume the Particles are treated in full, and the student carried as far forward as is possible in the art of composition in Greek.

GREEK READING BOOK, for the Use of Schools; containing the substance of the Practical Introduction to Greek Construing, and a Treatise on the Greek Particles; and also a Copious Selection from Greek Authors, with English Notes, Critical and Explanatory, and a Lexicon, by J. A. SPENCER, A. M. 12mo. $1 25.

A capital volume, having admirable Introductory Exercises on the Forms and Idioms of the language; a choice collection of passages (of length) from standard authors; notes clear and precise; and a copious lexicon at the end. It is fully equal to any one of the series.

In the above works Mr. Arnold has had the good sense to adopt the system of nature. A child learns his own language by imitating what he hears, and constantly repeating it till it is fastened in the memory; in the same way Mr. A. puts the pupil immediately to work at Exercises in Latin and Greek, involving the elementary principles of the language-words are supplied-the mode of putting them together is told the pupil-he is shown how the ancients expressed their ideas, and then, by repeating these things again and again-iterum iterumque— the docile pupil has them indelibly impressed upon his memory and rooted in his understanding.

The American editor is a thorough classical scholar, and has been a practical teacher for years in this city. He has devoted the utmost care to a complete revision of Mr. Arnold's works; has corrected several errors of inadvertence or otherwise, has rearranged and improved various matters in the early volumes of the series, and has attended most diligently to the acurate printing and mechanical execution of the whole. We anticipate most confidently the speedy adoption of the works in our schools and colleges.

"This little volume, to one who will read and ponder its excellent maxims, is worth its weight in gold. We have read it with rare satisfaction, which we trust all our readers will soon share with us. It is full of those short but impressive "sayings of wise and excellent men," which Archbishop Tillotson compares to the "dust of gold or the least sparks of the diamond."-Protestant Churchman.
