IN making choice of a title for the following pages, the writer has fixed upon, one which would seem to entail upon him the necessity of a brief apology and an explanation. As apology all that can be said amounts to this: that no other was at hand equally expressive (when understood) of the circumstances under which the majority of the sketches contained in this volume were committed to paper: and as explanation, it may be at once stated, that'the alpenstock is the name of the long iron-spiked pole, in common use on the Alps, in the hands of the Chamois-hunter, the crystal hunter, and the pedestrian traveller; and therefore not.
