In honourable rivalry of successful attempts of the same kind which have emanated from other Public Schools, the CARTHUSIANS of the present day have determined to shew themselves on the green, and fly their literary kite in the wide æther of London publication; convinced that, though the number of "stupendous balloons" which periodically soar aloft in the higher regions is so great that there is some danger of jostling, there is yet ample room and verge enough for their paper Ephemeral to sport its hour in the more contracted circulation of an humbler atmosphere, if those, who by all the ties of good public-school-feeling are bound to lend a helping hand to their pastime, will every now and then supply an additional paper to the tail of their soaring aspirations, and contribute their due proportion of that currency, which the Conductors, while they deprecate any idea of raising the wind by unfair puffery, believe to constitute the circulating medium of all literary aerostation.

To let go the string of their-metaphor: the Editors (" we are three") confidently look to their Schoolfellows, both past and present, for their hearty cooperation in their present undertaking, without which they need hardly remind them this humble attempt to do their School honour and service must of a certainty fail.

When they look especially to the credit which has been reflected back upon Charterhouse from the distinguished career of their Schoolfellows at the Universities within the last few years, they cannot doubt that, with their valuable aid, "THE CARTHUSIAN" will claim a character, not only in the partial judgment of their friends, but from the more unprejudiced ordeal of public opinion, which without such assistance it could never have hoped to challenge.

By the School itself (though they rejoice to say that it is in a flourishing condition and of increasing numbers), even with the addition of those Carthusians now at Oxford and Cambridge, a publication like the present could hardly be supported in full vigour; they therefore make a call, which they trust will not be in vain, on those of the "olden time," who acknowledging the benefits of an education on the lands and tenements of THOMAS SUTTON, and taking delight therein, are able, if they are but willing, to give them the assistance of their Portfolio and their Purse.

No. II. will be published on the 1st of June, 1837.

It is requested that all Communications for this Work may be addressed as early as possible, post-paid, to the Editors, care of Mr. Moore, 58, Barbican, by whom also Subscribers' names will be received, as well as by all respectable Booksellers. The real names of Contributors (which it will be desirable to receive) will if required be kept strictly secret.
