BE IT REMEMBERED, That on the twenty-seventh day of September, in the thirty-sixth year of the Independence of the United States of America, A. D. 1811, William Duane of the said District, hath deposited in this office, the title of a book, the right whereof he claims as proprietor, in the words following, to

"An Epitome of the Arts and Sciences: being a comprehensive system of the Elementary parts of an useful and polite Educa"tion; adapted to the use of schools in the United States..... "Illustrated by numerous engravings of subjects in Natural "History, and a variety of Statistical Tables The second

"edition.

"No one is obliged to learn and know every thing, for it is utterly "impossible....yet all persons are under some obligation to improve "their own understandings.

"Presume not too much upon a bright genius, a ready wit, and "good parts....for these, without labor and study, will never make a man of knowlege and wisdom." Watts on the mind.

In conformity to the Act of the Congress of the United States, entitled, "An Act for the encouragement of learing, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned" and also to the Act, entitled "An Act, supplementary to an Act, entitled "An Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned," and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints "
