Ce "Nouveau Choix de Leçons" n'est en réalité qu'un addendum aux autres ouvrages du même genre que nous avons récemment livrés au public. These Rules may be referred to for French Words that cannot be found in Dictionaries,* on account of their Gender, Number,

or other Grammatical modifications.

RULE I.

Words that cannot be found ending with s, x, e, or es, must be looked for

without.

RULE II.

When you cannot find a word without making such an alteration, change final

When you cannot find a word ending with a double consonant, and a final e or es, such as bonne, grasses, chienne, épaisses, suppose it spelt without the latter consonant and the e or es; as bon, gras, chien, épais.

RULE V.

When you meet with a word, such as l'homme, s'il, l'âme, m'aimiez-vous, jusqu'où, l'y, m'y, t’y, s'y, qu'a-t-il,† j'ai, &c., change the apostrophe into an a, an e, or an i, and look separately for the new word that this additional a, e, or i will form; for example, look for le homme, si il, la âme, me aimiez-vous, jusque où, le or la y, me y, te y, se y, que a il‚† je ai, &c.

RULE VI.

When two or more words are united thus: dit-il, savez-vous, est-ce, vingtdeux, celui-ci, celui-là, look for these words separately; as dit il, savez vous, est ce, vingt deux, celui ci, celui là; that is, if you cannot find them without this alteration.

RULE VII.

Should words be met with written thus, parla-t-il, danse-t-elle, drop the t (which is there only for sound's sake), and look for the words separately; as parla il, danse elle.

RULE VIII.

As you cannot find a verb in most French dictionaries without looking for the Present of the Infinitive of that verb,‡ to find out the Present of the Infinitive of
