CUVIER'S THEORY OF THE EARTH.

ESSAY ON THE THEORY of the EARTH. Translated from the French of M. CUVIER, Perpetual Secretary of the French Institute, Professor and Administrator of the Museum of Natural History, &c. &c. By ROBERT KERR, F. R. S. and F. A. S. Edinburgh. With Mineralogical Notes, and an Account of Cuvier's Geological Discoveries, by PROFESSOR JAMESON. Elegantly printed in one vol. 8vo. with Plates. Price 8s. boards.

To the student of Geology, this work will be extremely useful, as containing some very important and original views of the subject, and as being more occupied with the detail of interesting facts and observations, than the establishment of an ingenious theory. The Christian may furnish himself from this production of a Parisian philosopher, with armour to defend his faith against those writers who have endeavoured to overturn it by objections against the Mosaic account of the deluge, and the age of the human race. And the Essay is written in such an elegant style, is so perspicuous in its statements, and affords so much information on a most interesting part of Natural History, that no reater can fail to derive from it a large portion, both of entertainment and instruction.

BY JOHN JAMIESON, D.D. F.R.S. E. F. S. A. S.

AUTHOR OF AN ETYMOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE SCOTTISH LANGUAGE, &c.

It has been supposed, that the Editor has it in his power to give a more correct edition of both Works than any one that has yet been published, as he has bestowed much attention on the antiquated language in which they are written. In his search for the best authorities for illustrating the words in the Scottish Dictionary, he found it necessary not merely to consult the MS., but, for ensuring all possible accuracy, twice to correct the printed editions from it literatim. From the labour already bestowed on these works, with the aid of another revision of the MS., he hopes to have it in his power to present the Public with an accurate edition of both. He intends also to give a Short Sketch of the Life of each of the Writers, and to subjoin such notes as may seem necessary for the illustration of facts narrated, or for the elacidation of passages which are more obscure. He assures himself that, in the estimation of the Public, it must add greatly to the value of this Edition, that WALTER SCOTT, Esq. THOMAS THOMSON, Esq. and some other distinguished literary characters, have liberally promised their aid in supplying the necessary illustrations.

The work will be printed in two volumes post quarto, on a fine wove paper, each volume containing about 500 pages. Both will be delivered to Subscribers at Six Guineas in boards, payable on delivery. The work will be executed by Ballantyne in the finest manner.

It is hoped, that those who wish to subscribe, will send in their names as soon as possible; as it is meant that the work shall be put to press on the first of January next: and, as very few copies will be thrown off above the number subscribed før, the price will be afterwards raised. 1
