Hymn. Resignation.--Childlike dispositions. 1 QUIET, Lord, my froward heart ;

Make me teachable and mild ;
Upright, simple, free from art,

Make me as a weaned child;
From distrust and envy free,

Pleas'd with all that pleases Thee. 2 What Thou shalt to-day provide,

Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,

Calmly to Thy wisdom leave::
'Tis enough that Thou wilt care;

Why should I the burden bear? 3 As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own,
Knows he's neither strong nor wise,

Fears to stir a step alone;
Let me thus with Thee abide,

As my FATHER, GUARD, and GUIDE. 4 Thus preserv'd from Satan's wiles,

Safe from dangers, free from fears,
May I live upon Thy smiles,

Till the promis'd hour appears,
When the sons of God shall

prove
All their FATHER's boundless love.

Lymn.

Resignation under Afliction. 1 NAKED as from the earth we came,

And crept to life at first;
We to the earth return again,

And mingle with our dust.

[ocr errors]

2 The dear delights we here enjoy,

And fondly call our own,
Are but short favours borrow'd now,

To be repaid anon. 3 'Tis God that lifts our comforts high, .

Or sinks them in the grave;
He gives, and (blessed be His Name!)

He takes but what He gave.
4 Peace, all our angry passions, then;

Let each rebellious sigh
Be silent at His sov'reign will,

And every' murmur die.
5 If smiling mercy crown our lives,

It's praises shall be spread;
And we'll adore the justice too

That strikes our comforts dead.

Lyin.

Prayer for Resignation.
1 FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss

Thy sov'reign will denies,
Accepted at Thy throne of grace,

Let this petition rise:
2 Give me a calm, a thankful heart,

From ev'ry murmur free:
The blessings of Thy grace impart,

And make me live to Thee. 3 Let the sweet hope that Thou art mine,

My life and death attend;
Thy presence through my journey shine,

And crown my journey's end.'

Hymn.

Self-denial.

1 A SHAM'D of CHRIST! my soul disown

The mean ungen'rous thought:
Shall I disown that Friend, whose blood

To man salvation brought?

2 With the glad news of love and peace

From heav'n to earth He came;
For us endur'd the painful cross ;

For us despis’d the shame.
3 At His command we must take up

Our cross without delay:
Our lives—and thousand lives of ours-

His love can ne'er repay.

4 Each faithful suff'rer JESUS views

With infinite delight; Their lives to Him are dear, their deaths

Are precious in His sight.

5 To bear His Name, His cross to bear,

Our highest honour this ! Who nobly suffers now for Him

Shall reign with Him in bliss.

6 But should we in the evil day

From our profession fly,
JESUS the JUDGE, before the world,
The traitor will deny.

Trust in God.

1 BEGONE, unbelief,

My SAVIOUR is near,
And for my relief

Will surely appear:
By pray’r let me wrestle,

And He will perform;
With Christ in the vessel,

I smile at the storm.

2 Though dark be my way,

Since He is my Guide, "Tis mine to obey,

'Tis His to provide: Though cisterns be broken,

And creatures all fail,
The word He has spoken

Shall surely prevail.

3 His love in time past

Forbids me to think
He'll leave me at last

In trouble to sink :
Each sweet Ebenezer

I have in review,
Confirms His good pleasure

To help me quite through.

4 Determin'd to save,

He wątch'd o'er my path, When, Satan's blind slave,

I sported with death :

And can He have taught me

To trust in His Name, And thus far have brought me,

To put me to shame?

5 Why should I complain

Of want or distress,
Temptation or pain?

He told me no less :
The heirs of salvation,

I know from His Word,
Through much tribulation

Must follow their LORD.

6 How bitter that cup,

No heart can conceive,
Which He drank quite up,

That sinners might live!
His way was much rougher

And darker than mine;
Did Jesus thus suffer,

And shall I repine ?

7 Since all that I meet

Shall work for my good,
The bitter is sweet,

The med'cine is food :
Though painful at present,

'Twill cease before long, And then, Oh! how pleasant

The conqueror's song!
