Earnestly desiring and seeking Holiness,
1 JESUS, Thine all-victorious love
Shed in my heart abroad;
feet no longer rove, Rooted and fix'd in God.
2 Love only can the conquest win,
The strength of sin subdue, (Mine own unconquerable sin,)
And form my soul anew.
3 Love can bow down the stubborn neck,
The stone to flesh convert;
An adamantine heart.
4 O that in me the sacred fire
Might now begin to glow!
And make the mountains flow !
5 O that it now from heav'n might fall,
And all my sins consume !
Spirit of burning, come.
Illuminate my soul;
And sanctify the whole.
7 My stedfast soul, made one with Thee,
Shall then no longer move ;
And all my heart be love.
Earnestly desiring and seeking Holiness.
1 JESUS, the all-restoring Word,
My fallen spirit's hope,
Ah, when shall I wake up?
2 Thou, O my God, Thou only art
The Life, the Truth, the Way;
My sinking footsteps stay.
3. Of all Thou hast'on earth below,
In heav'n above, to give,
In Thee to walk and live.
4 Fill me with all the life of Love;
In mystic union join
The fellowship divine.
5 Open the intercourse between
My longing soul and Thee,
To all eternity
Earnestly desiring and seeking the Shepherd.
1 THOU Shepherd of Israel and mine,
The joy and desire of my heart,
I long to reside where Thou art:
Where all, who their SHEPHERD obey,
And screen'd from the heat of the day.
2 Ah! show me that happiest place,
The place of Thy people's abode, Where saints in an ecstasy gaze,
And hang on a crucified God:
Thy passion and death on the tree ;
To suffer and triumph with Thee..
3 'Tis there with the lambs of Thy flock,
There only I covet to rest; To lie at the foot of the rock,
Or rise to be hid in Thy breast : 'Tis there I would always abide,
And never a moment depart; Conceald in the cleft of Thy side,
Eternally held in Thy heart.
“ Whom have I in Heaven, &c."
i COME, SAVIOUR-Jesus, from above!
Assist me with Thy heav'nly grace! Empty my heart of earthly love,
And for Thyself prepare the place. 2 O let Thy sacred presence fill,
And set my longing spirit free! Which pants to have no other will,
But night and day to feast on Thee. 3 While in this region here below,
No other good will I pursue;
4 That path with humble speed I'll seek,
In which my SAVIOUR's footsteps shine; Nor will I hear, nor will I speak
Of any other love but Thine.
Divide this consecrated soul;
As LORD and MASTER of the whole.
6 Nothing on earth do I desire,
But l'hy pure love within my breast :
And freely give up all the rest.
Home in View.
1 As when the weary trav’ller gains
The height of some o’er-looking hill,
He eyes his home, though distant still. 2 While he surveys the much-lov'd spot,
He slights the space that lies between ; His past fatigues are now forgot,
Because his journey's end is seen. 3 Thus, when the Christian pilgrim views,
By faith, his mansion in the skies,
And wings his speed to reach the prize : 4 The thought of home his spirit cheers,
No more he grieves for troubles past; Nor any future trial fears,
So he may safe arrive at last.
5 'Tis there, he says, I am to dwell
With Jesus, in the realms of day;
And He will wipe my tears away. 6 Jesus, on Thee our hope depends,
To lead us on to Thine abode; Assur'd our hope will make amends
For all our toil while on the road.
