2 Though in a foreign land,

3

5

We are not far from home;
And nearer to our rest above

We ev'ry moment come.

GOD's grace will to the end,

Through all our journey shine; Nor present things, nor things to come, Shall quench His love divine.

When darkness veils our steps,
And foes our course molest;
Then is the time to trust our GOD,
And on His Name to rest.

Ah! why should guilty fears
Rob us of rest and peace?

The promise and the oath of GoD
Confirm our full release.

Hymn.

In a Storm.

1 THE billows swell, the winds are high,
And clouds o'ercast my wintry sky;
Out of the depths to Thee I call,
My fears are great, my strength is small,

2 O LORD, the pilot's part perform,

And guide and guard me through the storm; Defend me from each threat'ning ill;:: Control the waves; say, "Peace, be still."

3 Amidst the roaring of the sea,

[ocr errors]

My soul still hangs her hope on Thee:
Thy constant love, Thy faithful care,
Is all that saves me from despair.

4 Dangers of ev'ry shape and name
Attend the follow'rs of the LAMB,
Who leave the world's deceitful shore,
And leave it to return no more.

[ocr errors]

5 Though tempest-toss'd, and half a wreck,
My SAVIOUR through the floods I seek:
Let neither winds nor stormy main
Force back my shatter'd bark again.

Hymn.

Looking to God in the great water-flood.

1 GOD of my life, to Thee I call;
Afflicted at Thy feet I fall:

When the great water-floods prevail,
Leave not my trembling heart to fail!

2 Friend of the friendless and the faint!
Where should I lodge my deep complaint?
Where but with Thee, whose open door
Invites the helpless and the poor!

3 Did ever mourner plead with Thee,
And thou refuse that mourner's plea?
Does not the word still fix'd remain,
That none shall seek Thy face in vain?

4 That were a grief I could not bear,
Didst Thou not hear, and answer pray'r;
But a pray'r-hearing, answ'ring Gov,
Supports me under ev'ry load.

5 Fair is the lot that's cast for me;
I have an Advocate with Thee:
They whom the world caresses most
Have no such privilege to boast.

6 Poor though I am, despis'd, forgot,
Yet GOD, my GOD, forgets me not;
And he is safe, and must succeed,
For whom the LORD vouchsafes to plead.

Hymn.

In a Storm, with Christ our Refuge.

1 WHY those fears? behold 'tis JESUS olds the helm, and guides the ship: pread the sails, and catch the breezes Sent to waft us through the deep, To the regions

Where the mourners cease to weep.

2 Could we stay where death was hov'ring? Could we rest on such a shore?

No, the awful truth discov'ring,
We could linger there no more:
We forsake it;

Leaving all we lov'd before.

3 Though the shore we hope to land on,
Only by report is known;
Yet we freely all abandon,
Led by that report alone;
And with JESUS,

Through the trackless deep move on,

4 Led by that, we brave the ocean; Led by that, the storms defy; Calm amidst tumultuous motion, Knowing that our LORD is nigh. Waves obey Him,

And the storms before Him fly.

5 Render'd safe by His protection,
We shall pass the wat'ry waste;
Trusting to His wise direction,
We shall gain the port at last;
And with wonder

Think on toils and dangers past.

6 O! what pleasures there await us! There the tempests cease to roar; There it is that those who hate us Can molest our peace no more. Trouble ceases

On that tranquil happy shore.

Hymn.

In a Storm, with Christ our Refuge.

1 JESU, Lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my SAVIOUR, hide,
Till the storm of life be past;
Safe into the haven guide;
O receive my soul at last!

2 Other refuge have I none,
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee:
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me:
All my trust on Thee is stay'd;
All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head

With the shadow of Thy wing!

3 Thou, O CHRIST, art all I want;
More than all in Thee I find;
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick, and lead the blind:
Just and holy is Thy name;

I am all unrighteousness:
False and full of sin I am;

Thou art full of truth and grace.

4 Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
Grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound,
Make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee:
Spring thou up within my heart,
Rise to all eternity.

Hymn.

Struggle between Faith and Unbelief.

1 JESUS, our souls' delightful choice,
In Thee, believing, we rejoice:
Yet still our joy is mix'd with grief,
While faith contends with unbelief.
