Hymn.
Salvation by Grace.
1 GRACE! 'tis a charming sound, Harmonious to my ear; Heav'n with the echo shall resound, And all the earth shall hear.
2. Grace first contriv'd a way To save rebellious man,
And all the steps that grace display; Which drew the wondrous plan.
3 Grace taught my wand'ring feet To tread the heav'nly road,
And new supplies each hour I meet, While pressing on to GOD.
Grace all the work shall crown Through everlasting days;
It lays in heav'n the topmost stone, And well deserves the praise.
1 How shall we stand, when CHRIST appears? >
How come before our LORD? At that dread hour will cries or tears Avert the threat'ning sword?
2 Shall sinners plead the costly blood Of lambs or bullocks spilt?
Shall they allege their hearts are good, And think to hide their guilt?
3 Ah no; the LAME of GOD alone, The LAMB, whom GOD has sent, Can for our num'rous sins atone, And His just wrath prevent.
4 O LAMB of GOD! our sins forgive: On Thee our hopes we place: Say to our troubled spirits, Live; And save us by Thy grace.
Self-abasement and Justification.
1 MY GOD, my GOD, to thee I cry; Thee only would I know; Thy purifying blood apply,
And wash me white as snow.
2 Touch me, and make the leper clean; Purge my iniquity:
Unless Thou wash my soul from sin, I have no part with Thee.
3 But art Thou not already mine? Answer, if mine Thou art! Whisper within, Thou Love divine, And cheer my drooping heart.
4 Tell me again my peace is made, And bid the sinner live:
The debt's discharg'd, the ransom's paid, My FATHER must forgive.
5 Behold, for me the Victim bleeds, His wounds are open'd wide:
For me the Blood of Sprinkling pleads, And speaks me justified.
6 My humbled soul, when thou art near, In dust and ashes lies:
How shall a sinful worm appear, Or meet Thy purer eyes?
7 I loathe myself when GOD I see, And into nothing fall; Content if Thou exalted be, And CHRIST be All in All.
1 NOT all the outward forms on earth, Nor rites that GOD has given, Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth, Can raise a soul to heav'n.
2 The sov'reign will of GOD alone Creates us heirs of grace;
Born in the image of His SON A new peculiar race.
3 The SPIRIT, like some heav'nly wind, Blows on the sons of flesh, New-models all the carnal mind, And forms the man afresh.
4 Our quicken'd souls awake, and rise From the long sleep of death; On heav'nly things we fix our eyes, And praise employs our breath.
Pardon and Reconciliation.
1 COME, FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST, One GOD in Persons THREE, Bring back the heav'nly blessing, lost By all mankind and me.
2 Thy favour, and Thy nature too, To me, to all restore; Forgive, and after GOD renew, And keep us evermore.
3 Eternal SUN of RIGHTEOUSNESS, Display Thy beams divine, And cause the glories of Thy face Upon my heart to shine.
4 Light, in Thy light, O may I see! Thy grace and mercy prove; Reviv'd, and cheer'd, and bless'd by Thee, The Gop of pard'ning love.
5 Lift up Thy countenance serene, And let Thy happy child Behold, without a cloud between, The GODHEAD reconcil'd!
6 That all-comprising peace bestow On me, through grace forgiv'n ; The joys of holiness below, And then the joys of heav'n!
Difficulty of Conversion.
1 STRAIT is the way, the door is strait That leads to joys on high; 'Tis but a few that find the gate, While crowds mistake, and die.
2 Beloved self must be denied, The mind and will renew'd, Passion suppress'd, and patience tried, And vain desires subdued.
3 Flesh is a dang'rous foe to grace, Where it prevails and rules; Flesh must be humbled, pride abas'd, Lest they destroy our souls.
4 The love of gold be banish'd hence, (That vile idolatry:)
And ev'ry member, ev'ry sense, In sweet subjection lie.
5 The tongue, that most unruly pow'r, Requires a strong restraint; We must be watchful ev'ry hour, And pray, but never faint.
6 LORD, can a feeble helpless worm Fulfil a task so hard?
Thy grace must all my work perform, And give the free reward.
