Hymn. Self-righteousness vain. . i How vain the hopes which sinners build On duties they have done! And makes their folly known. . Guilty before the LORD; From ev'ry boasting word. And purity within; And leaves us in our sin. To hide our guilt and shame: And Life is in His Name. Hymn. Self-righteousness vain. That wait and tremble at My Word ? Come, make My Name your trust and stay. 2 No works nor duties of your own Can for the smallest sin atone; 3 The softest couch that nature knows, Can give the conscience no repose: Comfort and peace are mine to give. 4 Ye sons of pride, that kindle coals With your own hands to warm your souls, - Walk in the light of your own fire, Enjoy the sparks that ye desire : Hell waits you with her iron bands : Hymn. Of all the duties I have done; To trust the merits of Thy Son. 2 Now for the love I bear His Name, What was my gain I count but loss; And nail my glory to His cross. 3 Yes, and I must, and will esteem All things but loss for JESU's sake : . O may my soul be found in Him, And of His righteousness partake. Dares not appear before Thy throne; By pleading what my LORD has done. Hymn. WHEREWITH, O LORD, shall I draw near, And bow myself before Thy face? What shall I bring to gain Thy grace? 2 Will gifts delight the LORD Most High? Will multiplied oblations please? Or slaughter'd hecatombs appease? Can these wash out my guilty stain? Alas! they all must flow in vain! 4. What have I then wherein to trust? I nothing have, I nothing am: . My glory swallow'd up in shame. 5 Guilty I stand before Thy face; On me I feel Thy wrath abide: 'Tis just the sentence should take place; 'Tis just:- but, 0, Thy Son hath died! 6 Jesus, the LAMB of God, hath bled, He bore our sins upon the tree! Beneath our curse he bow'd His head; 'Tis finish'd! He hath died for me! i LORD, we confess our num'rous faults : How great our guilt has been ! And all our lives were sin. 2 But, O my soul, for ever praise, For ever love His Name, Of folly, sin, and shame. 3 'Tis not by works of righteousness, Which our own hands have done ; But we are sav'd by sov'reign grace Abounding through His Son. 4 'Tis from the mercy of our God i That all our hopes begin ; 'Tis by the water and the blood Our souls are wash'd from sin. in 5 'Tis through the purchase of His death, Who hung upon the tree, On such dry bones as we., 6 Rais'd from the dead we live anew; And justified by grace, And see our FATHER's face. I AMAZING grace! (how sweet the sound!). That sav'd a wretch like me! Was blind, but now I see. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev'd; The hour I first believ'd! 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; "Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. 4. The LORD has promis'd good to me, His Word my hope secures ; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. 5 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, A life of joy and peace, 6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; Will be for ever mine. |
