Hymn.

Expostulation with Sinners.

1 STOP, poor sinner! stop and think Before you farther go!

Will you sport upon the brink
Of everlasting woe?

Once again, I charge you, stop!
For, unless you warning take,
Ere you are aware, you drop
Into the burning lake!

2 Say, have you an arm like GOD,
That you His will oppose?
Fear you not that iron rod

With which He breaks His foes?
Can you stand in that dread day,
When He judgment shall proclaim,
And the earth shall melt away
Like wax before the flame?

3 Pale-fac'd death will quickly come
To drag you to his bar;
Then to hear your awful doom
Will fill you with despair:
All your sins will round you crowd,
Sins of a blood-crimson dye;
Each for vengeance crying loud,
And what can you reply?

4 Though your heart be made of steel,
Your forehead lin'd with brass,
GOD at length will make you feel,
He will not let you pass:

Sinners then in vain will call,

(Though they now despise His grace,) Rocks and mountains on us fall,

And Hide us from His face.

5 But as yet there is a hope
You may His mercy know;
Though His arm is lifted up,

He still forbears the blow:
'Twas for sinners JESUS died,
Sinners He invites to come :
None who come shall be denied';
He says, "There still is room."

Hymn.

Expostulation with Sinners.

1 WHY will ye lavish out your years
Amidst a thousand trifling cares;
While in this various range of thought
The one thing needful is forgot?

2 Why will ye chase the fleeting wind,
And famish an immortal mind;
While angels with regret look down
To see you spurn a heav'nly crown?
3 Th' eternal GOD calls from above,
And JESUS pleads His bleeding love;
Awaken'd conscience gives you pain;
And shall they join their pleas in vain?
4 Not so your dying eyes shall view
Those objects, which ye now pursue;
Not so shall heav'n and hell appear,
When the decisive hour is near.

5 Almighty GOD, Thy pow'r impart,
To fix convictions on the heart:
Thy pow'r unveils the blindest eyes,
And makes the haughtiest scorner wise.

Hymn.

Why will ye Die?"

1 SINNERS, turn, why will ye die?
GOD, your Maker, asks you why?
GOD, who did your being give,
Made you with Himself to live;

2 He the fatal cause demands,

Asks the work of His own hands,
Why, ye thankless creatures, why
Will ye cross His love, and die?

3 Sinners, turn, why will ye die?
GOD, your SAVIOUR, asks
you why
GOD, who did your souls retrievę,
Died Himself, that ye might live.

4 Will you let Him die in vain?
Crucify your LORD again?
Why, ye ransom'd sinners, why
Will ye slight His grace, and die?

5 Sinners, turn, why will ye die?

GOD, the SPIRIT, asks you why?
He who all your lives hath strove,
Woo'd you to embrace His love:

6 Will ye not His grace receive?
Will ye still refuse to live?
Why, ye long-sought sinners, why
Will you grieve your GOD, and die?

?

Hymn.

"Why will ye Die?"

1 WHAT could your REDEEMER do
More than He hath done for you,
To procure your peace with GOD?
Could He more than shed His blood?
After all His waste of love,
All His drawings from above,
Why will ye your LORD deny?
"Why will ye resolve to die?"

2 Turn, He cries, ye sinners, turn;
By His life your GOD hath sworn:
He would have you turn and live,
He would all the world receive.
If your death were His delight,
Would He you to life invite?
Would He ask, obtest, and cry,
"Why will ye resolve to die?"

3 Sinners, turn, while GOD is near:
Dare not think Him insincere:

Now, e'en now, your SAVIOUR stands; All day long He spreads His hands: Cries, "Ye will not happy be!

[ocr errors]

No, ye will not come to Me! "Me, who life to none deny; "Why will ye resolve to die?"

4 Can you doubt if GOD is love?
If to all His bowels move?
Will you not His Word receive?
Will you not His oath believe?
See! the suff'ring GOD appears!
JESUS weeps; believe His tears:
Mingled with His blood they cry,
"Why will
ye resolve to die?"

CHRIST.

1

Hymn.

Grace and Glory in the Person of Christ.

Now to the LORD a noble song!
Awake, my soul; awake, my tongue;
Hosanna to th' eternal Name,

And all His boundless love proclaim.

2 See where it shines in JESU's face,
The brightest image of His grace:
GOD, in the person of His SON,
Has all His mightiest works outdone.

3 The spacious earth and spreading flood Proclaim the wise and powerful GOD; And Thy rich glories from afar

Sparkle in ev'ry rolling star.

4 But in His looks a glory stands,
The noblest labour of Thine hands:
The pleasing lustre of His eyes
Outshines the wonders of the skies.
