PREFACE.

Six years have elapsed since Part V of this work was published, and those years have been for me a time of anxious care and unremitted labour in discharging the duties of my episcopal office, amidst many difficulties, and even amidst storm and conflict, the din of which has hardly yet passed away. Nevertheless I thank God that I have been enabled thus far to complete my critical examination of the Pentateuch and Book of Joshua, though, with Nehemiah of old, I have had to build with the trowel in one hand and a weapon in the other. I must plead these engagements as some excuse for the delay which has arisen in the publication of this volume, as well as for some of the defects which will, no doubt, be discovered in it. On the other hand, I have thus had the opportunity of reconsidering my work from time to time, and testing repeatedly the soundness of my conclusions, which was the more to be desired inasmuch as those conclusions, if found to be substantially true, must materially modify in many important respects the popular traditionary view as to the development of religion in Israel, e.g. as regards the origin of the priestly system and the whole body of Levitical sacrifices.

I will here, as on former occasions, give some account of my work in this volume, by sketching briefly the contents of the
