TO

THE THIRD EDITION.

SINCE the last edition of this History, numerous publications have appeared, comprising despatches and memoirs relating to many of our most distinguished warriors and statesmen. These documents have been submitted to a diligent and accurate scrutiny, for the purpose of enlarging, correcting, and adorning the present Work: nor have the kind suggestions of friendship, or the candid opinions of criticism, or the task of careful revision, or the Author's own reflexions on its various topics, been neglected: more particularly, in the additional matter now introduced, he has exercised that strict impartiality which he previously endeavored to observe, and to make a principal feature in his Work; an impartiality prompting him equally to acknowlege merit or good intentions wherever discovered, and to reprove iniquity or censure indiscretion, with whatever character they were found allied. On some points he has ventured to speak more freely than before, because the lapse
