INTRODUCTION.

THERE is as much virtue, benevolence, and humanity, to be found within the circuit of Banco Regis, as there is to be met with at the West end, or any other part of the metropolis; and there cannot be any justifiable reason given, why poor misfortune should receive the lash of vice, and become the sport of the unfeeling scribbler. It is true, we meet here with the unfortunate and improvident, but is it not cruel to hold them up to scorn and ridicule? A man may be unfortunate, but it is no reason he must also be infamous, or that the two descriptions should be concomitant.

Ask the man of adversity, how opulent men act towards him, and you will find that he is haughty and overbearing, but when reduced to
